This is my opinion only!
In North America, Academic freedom is given to both students and faculty. Research is the main backbone of the academic system in most of the Universities. Hence, faculty may evaluate the student's subject knowledge based on their research outcome (for Graduate students!). Therefore, industry is willing to share their problem and ready to fund for their research projects. Students' and Investigators actively involve in the project and get benefited.
In India, Limited academic freedom is given, especially in an affiliated engineering colleges. So, a faculty is in a position to focus mainly on the predefined syllabus (course) and preparing the students to pass the university exam, but they could not focus on industry specific problem. As a result, very limited industry is willing to share their problem and ready to fund for their research projects. Therefore, outcome of the Graduate student's is not at high standard and many students' joined in graduate courses, just to get a degree. On the other hand, IITs and few deemed universities and autonomous institutions like SSNCE, Chennai do much better (as like in abroad!) until NIRF Ranking introduced.
Now, Institutions, like Chennai Institute of Technology, SRM Eswari, etc., give more attention on solving industry use-case by the Undergraduate Students and they are using Zoho school model for fast learners.
