Midterm

Tuesday, October 31st from 3-5 PM

Your exam will consist of one article to read. You will need to write a summary (10 points) and a response paper (20 points) for this article. You may use a pen/pencil for the exam. However, NO dictionary/thesaurus or electronic devices are allowed. Please arrive at your exam at least 15 minutes early to check-in. Remember to bring your student id with you.

If you cannot make the midterm that day due to a conflict with another midterm, sporting event, etc. you must complete the paperwork for the midterm makeup by October 29th. You can obtain the form from the secretary's office in D05 (Women's Foundation Building-2nd Floor) or in A06 (Men's Foundation Building-Ground Floor). Please fill it out and bring it to your teacher to sign and pass along to the administration. You must attach proof (screenshot of announcement, email, paperwork) that shows you have a valid excuse.

The makeup will be on November 7th from 3:30 - 5:30 pm. The Foundation Program office will contact you with the location.

Midterm Tips:

• Start by reading the article quickly without stopping. Without looking at the article write down the gist of the article (author's thesis). Then highlight/underline the article's thesis, main ideas, and concluding thoughts.
• Read the directions for the summary and response carefully
• Write the full summary BEFORE your response paper. This way, your job writing the short summary for the response paper introduction will be easier.
• Summary writing: one paragraph, no specific details, no opinions from you--just the ideas from the article
• Response paper: three paragraphs minimum, conclusion is optional, make sure to write a stance in the thesis/topic sentences, and include clear transitions from your paraphrases to your response.
