My Biggest Investment (2024)
My Biggest Investment (2024)
During one of my Scouting events, I had to travel from Negros to Iloilo. Unsure of where to stay, I called one of my closest friends, Nathan, someone I met through the Scout Youth Forum. I asked if I could spend the night at his boarding house, and without hesitation, he welcomed me in. That evening, we caught up over dinner. His aunt mentioned I’d need to pay 150 Pesos to stay overnight—a small price I was more than happy to pay.
That 150 Pesos gave me more than just a place to sleep. It gave me a warm room, a roof over my head, and the company of a friend who made me feel at home. As we talked into the night, Nathan asked me what else I thought 150 Pesos could buy. I remembered it was just enough for a young Scout to purchase a neckerchief and a carabao slide.
It hit me then: that same amount, in the context of Scouting, had once given me not just an accessory but a doorway. A doorway to my first campfire, my first forum, my first real experience of being part of something bigger than myself. That simple purchase gave me a home, a sense of belonging, and a community bound by shared values.
Looking back, joining Scouting is the greatest investment I’ve ever made. Who would’ve thought that 150 Pesos could open the door to a life of leadership, friendship, and service—a return far richer than anything money alone could buy.
