Hi there, Nate here. Quilter started off as my solo acoustic project after Grand Rapids based band All is Well, consisting of Erik Rice, Nathan Coles, Hannah Van Slett, Nick Van Slett, and myself, hung up our hats in 2018, putting a bittersweet end to a short but successful effort in the West Michigan area. Inevitably, I wanted the songs I had been writing to feature some of my best friends (and favorite musicians). The songs began to morph more and more into a full-fledged full-band sound. Although a lot of DNA from our previous band has bridged over into Quilter, the song's skeletons, style, and especially lyrics derive heavily from my own influences. Some of the songs date back 7 years before the completion of the EP. A promise made to myself was a driving force for me to finish, record, and release these songs, in hopes that more people would find comfort in the content of the EP.
Behind the name: I had a running list of potential band names. Near the top of the list was "Quilter". I grew up watching my mom make quilts. Always having quilts around the house, and as bedspreads, the name serves as a nod to my mom, and an artifact of my past and present. I also see quilts as a metaphor for the band's music. Splashes of color and textures, outlined with geometric shapes and patterns mimic the way we tend to write melodies, harmonies, and structures. Everything fits together just so.
