Overview

British Columbia is home to one of the world’s largest post-production, animation and visual effects hub with many invested stakeholders, companies and organizations that support many workers in this sector. Many of the focus areas for sustainability have been concentrated on live action production as the impact in terms of overall carbon emissions is more significant in that area. There are many passionate companies in these areas who are already tracking their footprint and establishing sustainability goals and actions but there has not been a concerted effort to showcase those efforts or understand the full picture. We would like this part of the production process to become involved in our overarching environmental sustainability efforts and therefore want to provide tools, resources, and inspiration to get involved.

Who’s Involved?

Reel Green: Founded in British Columbia in 2006, Reel Green™ is a strategic initiative of the BC Film Commission. It unites Canada’s motion picture industry to reduce environmental impacts by providing practical tools and fostering strategic collaboration between the industry, government, and the local economy.

Vancouver Post Alliance: The Vancouver Post Alliance is the voice and vision of the thriving post-production sector. Its primary focus is the promotion, education, and support of the many thousands of post-production technicians and artists working in BC.

Producing for the Planet: Coalition of Canadian independent media producers who are making a commitment to act on climate change.

NYIT Vancouver: New York Tech, is a private university founded in 1955 with campuses in various locations, including Manhattan, Long Island, Arkansas, China, Abu Dhabi, and Vancouver. The institution provides career-oriented, technology-driven education, and the Vancouver campus offers graduate programs in business, cybersecurity, and energy management.

 QSS: Quwa Smart Services, we provide comprehensive ASHRAE Level Energy Audits designed to optimize the performance of buildings across a variety of sectors. Whether it’s affordable housing units, multi-unit residential buildings, commercial spaces, or industrial facilities, our audits are customized to address the unique needs of each client.

Community Involvement

We are looking for a small focus group of post-production companies that are interested in understanding more about their energy consumption and creating baselines for carbon consumption to help meet their sustainability goals. The selected companies will commit to working with our research team to provide relevant data related to their operations and energy consumption. These contributors can remain anonymous or choose to make their companies participation public to encourage other companies to participate going forward.

By participating in this program, each company will receive an energy audit report at no cost, designed specifically for your operations and facilities. The report delivers clear insights and practical pathways to strengthen both efficiency and sustainability. The Report Provides:

1.   Comprehensive Energy Profile

Clear picture of current energy consumption, costs, and inefficiencies.

2.   Actionable Recommendations

A prioritized list of Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs), including technical and financial analysis for informed decision-making.

3.   Cost Savings Opportunities

Identification of ways to lower utility bills through efficiency improvements.

4.   GHG Reduction Insights

Quantified carbon footprint reductions aligned with sustainability and ESG goals.

5.   Funding & Incentives Guidance

Details on available rebates, grants, and provincial/federal programs to help offset implementation costs.

6.   Implementation Roadmap

Step-by-step actions to support long-term energy and sustainability planning, while improving equipment reliability, occupant comfort, and overall productivity.

7.   Additional Engagement

The results can be presented directly at each company, with an emphasis on the next practical steps and building energy awareness among staff. This workshop not only empowers employees but also strengthens corporate sustainability commitments, enhances stakeholder reporting, and supports regulatory compliance.
