Event Description: The Queer in Robotics event at the IROS Community Building Day aims to build an inclusive community for queer students, researchers, and practitioners. Queer in AI’s demographic survey reveals that many queer scientists in the robotics community do not feel completely welcome in conferences and their work environments, with the main reasons being a lack of queer community and role models. The purpose of this event is to address these documented barriers that Queer researchers face by creating a venue for Queer researchers to find role models and communicate their research. We aim to facilitate academic development and increase visibility of the queer research community

This event at ICRA 2026 created a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQIA+ researchers in robotics and to foster connections between queer researchers to facilitate the academic development of the queer research community. Activities included queer robotics trivia, lightning talks, and generation of suggestions for inclusive organizing.

Welcome Social at IROS 2023
Welcome Social at IROS 2023
We hosted our first major event at IROS 2023 in Detroit, Michigan! We were so happy to welcome roughly 40 attendees to this joyful queer space. We hosted our event at Public House in Ferndale, Michigan. Ferndale is fondly referred to by residents as the "gayborhood".
In addition to custom stickers, we had custom mugs printed that were given away in a raffle at the event! We also got a large banner printed that we hope to see at future events.

Several Robotics: Science and Systems attendees joined Queer in Robotics at Nita Coffee in Daegu, South Korea for some light refreshments to beat the summer heat and humidity.
