The purpose of this site is to highlight, in a public way, the extent of the speeding problem along Queens Park Avenue in Bournemouth. This is a 30mph road, but vehicles routinely travel along this road far in excess of the speed limit. This site has focussed on the speeds above 50mph, as this is the most serious category of speeding.
BCP Council do not see speeding as a priority unless there is associated casualty data. Local authorities, when setting speed limits, must take into account needs of vulnerable road users and do not need to take into account any operational decisions of the police on the level of enforcement.
Lower speeds limits are being introduced across the world as health, road safety and environmental professionals see how they transform our communities. In its Global Plan for Road Safety 2021-2030, the UN calls for 20mph to be implemented as a default wherever motors mix with vulnerable road users. Some countries have responded to this at national level. Spain has already set a national 30km/h default for urban/village roads and Wales is planning the change to a national default 20mph limit for built up roads in 2023.
BAND A: 31-40mph would be 3 penalty points and a fine of 25-75% of weekly income. A Speed Awareness Course may be available for first offences
BAND B: 41-50mph would be 4-6 penalty points or disqualified for 1-4 weeks and a fine of 75-125% of weekly income
BAND C: Over 51mph would be 6 penalty points or disqualified for 1-8 weeks and a fine of 125-175% of weekly income
