So I am new to CarPlay/AA, I just had an aftermarket head unit installed in my 9 year old car since it wasn't new enough for a retrofit from the manufacturer. I purchased a Sony XAV-AX5500 from Crutchfield and had them do the installation.

I've only had a chance to play around with it for a little while, but it worked flawlessly for me on a 90 minute drive with no issues to speak of. Once I got home I double-checked my firmware version and I realized I was one update behind, my head unit has version 1.12 and the most recent one on the Sony website is 1.13. According to the website the firmware update does as follows:

1. Only if you had tried to restart or restore the car stereo to factory settings, but these methods are not working, then we recommend you to flash the machine and firmware.

2. Flashing/updating the firmware is your last choice, it is used only after other solutions had been tried but failed; and it is better to ask for customer service help before download.

3. It is necessary to know the corresponding model of your head unit, please confirm it on the ESSGOO car audio product.

4. The flashing process may not be successful just at one time, then you may need to try 3-5 times by changing the computer, or re-downloading, or changing the SD/TF card or changing the U disk.

Confirm the system version of the head unit which is shown as below

To meet my goals, I decided I wanted to completely remove my car's radio in lieu of doing a tablet mounting system that connects to the head unit via Bluetooth or a headphone jack, which is what you typically see with these types of builds. I wanted my tablet to BE my head unit, thus minimizing noise and loss of sound quality, as well as reducing the amount of connections and plug ins that had to be made just to get music to play.
