On August 3rd, 2024 The Rio Grande International Study Center (RGISC) launched a Urban Heat Mapping Initiative in Webb County, TX.
Over 100 volunteers drove around town for 1 hour through 3 different times of the day to identify the hottest places in Laredo, El Cenizo, & Rio Bravo. This data will be used to develop temperature and heat index maps to help address heat-related vulnerabilities across the region.
The results of the 2024 one-day mapping campaign can be found below. The results are presented in several formats, including a StoryMap of the campaign and its results, an Executive Summary, an interactive web application, research reports, and downloadable data.
This StoryMap created by RGISC explores why CALOR was formed, how the 2024 campaign was conducted, and provides a high-level analysis of the campaign's results.
We recommend starting here if you are unfamiliar with the campaign!
Discover Webb County's hottest places mapped during our 2024 CALOR mapping campaign. Type your address into the map and explore different map layers (observed temperature, or "traverse points"; modeled temperature; and modeled heat index), for the morning, afternoon, and evening of August 3, 2024. No ArcGIS subscription is required.
For advanced, licensed ArcGIS Online users to more broadly interact with the results, bring in additional data layers, perform analyses, or pull these layers into other new or existing web maps.
