Plugin qTranslate-X offers a way to maintain dynamic multilingual content on a WordPress site. While static localization is already excellently implemented and offered by WordPress framework through po/mo file framework, it is still impossible to maintain dynamic multilingual content without an additional specialized plugin, to a kind of which qTranslate-X belongs to. For example, what if you need to make title, content and excerpt of a page to be multilingual? In theory, it could be handled by po/mo files, but in an insanely inconvenient way.

The plugin qTranslate-X is a descendant of qTranslate, originally developed by Qian Qin, while it undergone a significant changes in both underlying database framework and user interface. The design of page and post editors is drastically changed and improved to be much less vulnerable to WP updates. Instead of seeing multiple lines per each language for title, qTranslate-X provides Language Switching Buttons, which, once pressed, make all the text fields to be filled with the language chosen. The instant language change happens locally in your browser without sending an additional request to the server.

I am working on one Wordpress website. We use twentyeleven theme. Site is available in 3 languages, Czech, English and Russian. For translations we use qTranslate plugin for Wordpress qTranslate plugin .

Cannot redeclare qs_base64_serialize() (previously declared in /home/xxx/www/xxx/wp-content/plugins/qtranslate/qtranslate_services.php:80) in /home/xxx/www/xxx/wp-content/plugins/qtranslate-xp/ppqtranslate_services.php on line 91

If you are using the qTranslate Importer plugin without WPML, the output will be a site with just one language. The conversion process will ask you which language you want to maintain. All other languages will be deleted from the site.

I followed their FAQ and Wordpress' Right-to-Left Language Support. The FAQ of the plugin says it should work automatically but if it doesn't that I need to check Wordpress' documentation on the issue, so I did, it says this:

Good moring! First of all i would like to say thanks for the plugin and second of all apologize for my english. I have all my web site with this plugin, but last week i download Qtranslate X to translate my wordpress web. The problem is that these two plugins dont have a compatibility. Is there any option to make it work? ..

Mathieu Delporte, who has helped me at this forum post -custm-post-type-and-fields-translation-of-the-custom-field has convinced me that the best way to translate custom fields created with ACF plugin is to use WPML.

But WPML is a plugin that you need to buy. Its not very expensive. But before I go and buy it, I would like to double check if there is some other way to translate ACF fields. What do you do? How do you translate it?

It seems like a very basic thing. As soon as you use the two famous plugins CPT and ACF and as soon as you live in an non-English-native-speaking-country you bump at this challenge. So what did you do?

I linked to qTranslate-X, which is a fork of the original qTranslate plugin. The original qTranslate plugin is apparently no longer being developed. The qTranslate-X developers have apparently fixed a bunch of bugs that were in the original plugin.

In the article I also mentioned a plugin which had been among my absolute favorites for a long time: qTranslate. It was an easy-to-use solution for content localization and I had it installed on almost all of my websites (since I like to give out content in more than one language).

The cool thing about qTranslate had always been its convenience. All content would be available in one post. By adding extra tabs to the WordPress editor (one per each language), the plugin made working with several localizations as easy as working with one.

You can either download qTranslate X from the WordPress plugin directory and install it manually or find it via the plugin installer in your WordPress backend. Whichever route you choose, make sure you activate it afterwards.

The first thing you want to do is enable all the languages your website should be available in. The plugin comes with 23 languages already set up which you can easily enable or disable by clicking the appropriate field.

Finally, the Import/Export section deserves some attention if you are installing qTranslate X on a website with existing content or on one which was running an older version of the plugin. Either adjust all posts to the correct language manually or have qTranslate X do it for you. In any case, if you mess with the database, make a backup first!

You can also use more than one shortcode in a row, like in this manner: [:en]English text[:de]German text[:]. The plugin will filter your content according to the shortcode and only display the chosen language.

In the process, the new team behind the plugin also integrated a bunch of very sensible and much needed additions. With growing support for other favorites out there (such as WordPress SEO by Yoast), qTranslate X has the chance to once again become a hit among its users. For anyone looking for a (paid) alternative, there is also WPML.

I used that approach before, but I wanted to add tabs for custom fields, like qtranslate do with pages, post etc. It could be possible if every custom fields would have class or id. I tried with class (i added class name in qtranslate configuration), but it doesn't work.

Note that in older versions of qtranslate there was other function to get current language - qtrans_getLanguage() and this is what you find in many WP Support topics. If you are using new qtranslate X plugin, you have to use qtranxf_getLanguage() function instead.

Once you have added your id to your fields, then you can go and register it in the plugin as quoted above I guess. I do not know this plugin (and didn't test it) but this is my take on it according to what I read.

There are obviously similar plugins like this, but PolyLang is the one out of the grabbag of 20 - 30ish ones that has been the one with the least complains - both from a developer and adminstrative / user point of view.

You can find, install and activate your preferred backup plugin in the WordPress dashboard or download the plugin from the WordPress website and then upload and activate it on the plugins page in the WordPress dashboard.

On the Falang plugin Languages page, add the same qTranslate-X languages. If you need to change the default language (for example from US English to British English) at the top of list, click the edit button. You can change the local and flag.
