There has finally been some visible progress towards the final goal of reopening Woodward High School. The half a centuries old building is living some of its last days now. Construction fencing has been erected around the building in the past couple of weeks at the 11211 location. Backhoes and other construction equipment can now be seen at the site. However, this visible progress comes after a while of no visible progress on the building.

From the outside, it appears that Woodward is behind schedule. The schedule that we are looking at is the one on the MCPS Woodward Reopening Project. On the MCPS web page for Woodward, they state that, "The Old Woodward High School will be abated and demolished by January 2021." Obviously the building is not demolished, or Quarantine Today would not have been able to take photos of the building in late February. The building is not demolished, so they are already a month or more off the schedule outlined on the MCPS Website. The architect for the project is Grimm and Parker, and the construction company is Hess Construction as seen in the top image.

This new Woodward High will be constructed in two phases. Phase 1 will act as a holding school for current Northwood High school Students while their building is being renovated. This will be a 2 year situation if everything stays on track. According to the web page, phase 1 will have everything necessary for a Montgomery County High School student to graduate. MCPS is discussing two options for athletic field usage for Northwood. The first option they have is to use Northwood's athletic complex. They are also looking in to using Timberlawn park, which is located directly behind the Woodward building. They are discussing their options with the Parks and the Northwood community. Phase 1 is scheduled to be completed before the start of the 2023-2024 school year. They say that phase two construction will wrap up in 2025. The phase 2 building will be the new Woodward High and have a 2700 student capacity.
