We will spend one afternoon together exploring the Borromean Islands on Lake Maggiore, an unexpectedly dramatic landscape of water, mountains, and small islands shaped over centuries by both nature and the Borromeo family. The trip will take us by boat to Isola Bella, known for its Baroque palace and terraced gardens that almost spill down into the lake. There will be time to walk the gardens, stop for coffee, and explore the island at a relaxed pace before returning by boat and bus to Ascona.Â
The centuries-old family crest of the Borromeo family famously features the Borromean rings, a prime example of a Brunnian link. The rings possess a delicate topological property: no two individual rings are linked to each other, yet together, all three are topologically bound. If you remove any single ring, the entire structure completely falls apart.
