About Odessa

Odessa is the third most populous city of Ukraine and a major tourism center, seaport and transportation hub located on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea. The population is more than 1 million people. The city was founded in 1794 by a decree of the Russian empress Catherine the Great. During the 19th century, Odessa was the fourth largest city of Imperial Russia, after Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Warsaw. Its historical architecture has a style more Mediterranean than Russian, having been heavily influenced by French and Italian styles. Some buildings are built in a mixture of different styles, including Art Nouveau, Renaissance and Classicist.

Odessa is a real pearl by the sea, which is famous all over the world for its historical and cultural attractions, beaches and healing resorts. Odessa is also considered the capital of humor. The resort area of the city stretches for tens of kilometers along the Black Sea coast.

Odessa is a major scientific and educational center of Ukraine.

The historic center of the city is listed on the preliminary UNESCO World Heritage List.

The city's public transit system is currently made up of trams, trolleybuses and buses. The airport is located almost within the city limits, about 10 km from the city center; the railway station is just in the very city center.
