Single-photon emitters generate light one photon at a time and are key components for secure quantum communication and photonic quantum information processing. Solid-state quantum emitters are particularly attractive because they can provide bright and stable quantum light while being integrated with photonic circuits.
Localized excitons and atomic defects can also host optically addressable spin states. These quantum states respond sensitively to magnetic fields, temperature, pressure, and strain, enabling nanoscale quantum sensing.
QPOD Laboratory studies both the generation and control of single photons and the optical manipulation of spin defects for quantum sensing. We investigate low-dimensional materials and solid-state defects, including atomically thin platforms such as hBN, to develop integrated quantum light sources, quantum photonic devices, and high-resolution quantum sensors.

As semiconductor devices approach the atomic scale, conventional electronics faces fundamental limits in power consumption and heat generation. Overcoming these limits requires new materials and devices that can transmit and process information using light and quantum states, rather than relying solely on electrical charge.
In atomically thin two-dimensional semiconductors, photoexcited electrons and holes strongly bind to form excitons. Excitons connect electronic and optical signals and can serve as carriers of energy and information. Because these materials are highly sensitive to strain, electric fields, and their surrounding environment, exciton energy and transport can be controlled with nanoscale precision.
QPOD Laboratory investigates how excitons can be generated, confined, and directed within low-dimensional semiconductors. Our goal is to establish new platforms for compact, low-power optoelectronic devices, excitonic circuits, ultrasensitive sensors, and quantum photonic technologies.

Just as electronics has advanced by integrating millions of transistors onto a single chip, integrated photonics brings multiple optical functions—such as light generation, routing, modulation, and detection—onto a compact platform. This approach can replace bulky optical setups with smaller, more stable, and scalable systems.
Integrated photonics supports applications ranging from optical communication and precision sensing to emerging technologies such as co-packaged optics. It also provides an essential platform for connecting and controlling single-photon emitters and other quantum optical devices on a chip.
QPOD Laboratory aims to develop waveguides, resonators, and optical coupling structures, and to integrate them with excitons in low-dimensional semiconductors and solid-state quantum emitters. We seek to establish photonic platforms that can efficiently generate, route, and control both classical and quantum light.

Optical fibers can serve as thin, flexible sensors for real-time measurements of shape, temperature, and pressure. Changes in bending, strain, or the surrounding environment alter the optical signal, enabling sensing over long distances and in confined spaces.
QPOD Laboratory has developed fiber-optic shape-sensing systems using fiber Bragg gratings and data-driven signal analysis, including three-dimensional tracking for endoscopes and catheters. We further combine optical sensing with deep learning to improve measurement accuracy and robustness for applications in medical devices, robotics, and structural monitoring.
