COMMUNITY CENTER FOR FAMILY JUSTICE, CHAPEL & ORANGE ST, NEW HAVEN, CT
2020.1. - 2020.5., SPRING ADVANCED STUDIO: JONATHAN TOEWS / TURNER BROOKS
Domestic violence has already become an urgent issue in the city of New Haven. Aiming at providing a facility of both efficiency and proper care, the proposal explores finding a subtle balance between its “inward” qualities as a facility that deals with serious social issues of domestic violence and sometimes crimes, and its “outward” qualities as a civic center that would serve as an open shelter for mutual help, public education and other community activities. Two basic thoughts guide the entire design process. The first one would be about how the space could be organized and shaped into a diversity of ‘humane’ qualities to fulfill different needs of muLtiple programs under a dominant, even mechanic order of scale and structure. The second one would therefore be about how the space organization would match with the human movement and activities in the architecture to create a smooth “sequence” of both services/programs and spatial experience.
