HYBRID URBAN MATRIX

URBAN FABRIC RE-PATCHING, BAITASI HISTORIC PRESERVATION DISTRIC, BEIJING, CHINA

2016.10. - 2016.12., 4TH YEAR URBAN DESIGN STUDIO, ASSOCIATE PROF. GE ZHONG

COOPERATIVE WORK WITH JINGCHAO SHENG, HANQIANG WEN

The Inner Fuchengmen Avenue - Financial Avenue - White Stupa Temple (Baitasi) site is currently filled with typical urban conflicts and complexities of historic Beijing. In the approximately 2 square-kilometer area, the hybrid co-existence, or juxtaposition, of modern office building blocks, residential towers from more than 30 years ago, courtyard dwellings from 1800s, as well as the Stupa and other temples that date back to as early as 13th centry. What we are trying to solve here are the following 3 questions: 1) How to constrain the expansion of the modern fabric of Financial Avenue; 2) How to re-organize, or, integrate and connect the important places, no matter existing or vanished, modern or historic; 3) What is the possible superior order, or structure of urban space of the site.

Facing the problems above, we applied a system of nodes that are mutually connected as a network and boundaries as symbolic walls to constrain modern development, based on the research on the historical urban forms, dimensions and fabrics of the site. Both the nodes network and the boundary mega complex are fitted within a module grid that exerts a superior, or, immanent order on the whole area.
