 FACULTY

Jeff Murugan

is Professor of Mathematical Physics in the Department of Mathematics & Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town and a Simons Associate at the ICTP in Trieste, Italy. His research interests lie primarily in understanding emergent phenomena, from condensed matter to neurophysics. His recent focus has been on low-dimensional quantum field theory, topological quantum matter and quantum chaos in disordered systems. He is a recipient of a Distinguished Teachers Award of the University of Cape Town.

Shajid Haque

is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and a member of the HEPCAT group. He is interested in Quantum Information theory and Gauge/Gravity duality. Quantum Information is the perfect melting pot for integrating different areas of Physics, Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science. Presently, he is working on how complutational complexity can be related to quantum chaos. He is also interested in Cosmology and String Cosmology.

Jaco van zyl

is a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics & Applied Mathematics with expertise in quantum complexity, quantum chaos and holography. Jaco is currently  working on understanding the theoretical underpinnings of quantum technologies with a focus on quantum batteries.

 ASSOCIATE FACULTY

Jonathan Shock

is Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Applied Mathematics and head of the ShockLab research group. With a background in high energy theoretical physics, his focus is on using string theory to understand strongly coupled matter. His recent research is also now focused on using Machine Learning both as a tool for analysing big datasets (from cosmology to neuroscience) as well as in the framework of Reinforcement Learning to study cognition and awareness. He is also a recipient of a Distinguished Teachers Award of the University of Cape Town.

Amanda WEltman

is Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Applied Mathematics, SARCHI Chair in Physical Cosmology and head of the HEPCAT research group. Her research focus is on the fundamental physics that underlies the nature of the Universe, spanning a diverse spectrum from high energy theory to astrophysics. Her current fascination lies in the physics of Fast Radio Bursts and their application to cosmology. She is one of the Lead Investigators on the HIRAX project which is a 21cm intensity mapping experiment that will allow us to both learn about dark energy and its evolution and learn a fortune about FRBs.
