The Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal started its operation from 2009.
You need to represent yourself in your case at QCAT or apply for permission for representation by a lawyer in a case from the tribunal.
QCAT decisions are publishing online by Queensland Judgment.
The objectives of this tribunal are-
To deal independently with cases which are in its jurisdiction
To deal with civil and administrative matters in a quick, economical, fair and an informal manner.
To be open and accessible in its functions
To maintain consistency and quality in the redressal of issues
Maintain the knowledge and the expertise of its members and adjudicators.
Disputes in its jurisdiction can be resolved through hearing, mediation or conference. Many of the QCAT’s adjudicators are from the legal profession or belong to other specialised fields related to their area of jurisdiction.
The QCAT proceedings take place in their CBD offices. In case you are unable to attend the proceedings in person you can also apply to attend by phone or videoconferencing; however your application should be received 3 days prior to the proceedings.
The decisions taken by QCAT are legally binding and enforceable.
Areas of jurisdiction:
adult administration and guardianship
