The second case was an 85-year-old male, dromedary camel owner living in Doha. On 18 March, the patient presented to the emergency department at Hamad Medical Corporations with a history of productive cough for one-week, high grade fever and shortness of breath, and was admitted to the medical ward on the same day, during which the clinical status of the patient deteriorated. A nasopharyngeal swab was collected and tested positive for MERS-CoV by RT-PCR (upE and ORF1a genes) at the Hamad Medical Corporation virology laboratory on 19 March. On 22 March, the patient was intubated and transferred to the ICU where he died on 14 April. The patient had comorbidities including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia. The epidemiological investigation revealed that 14 days prior to admission to the hospital the case had travelled with his camel to Saudi Arabia, where he visited other dromedary camel owners. The case also reported frequent contact with dromedary camels, as well as consuming raw milk from dromedary camels in Saudi Arabia.

One of the new reported cases had travel history outside of Qatar and it is likely that the infection was acquired as a result of zoonotic infection from direct or indirect contact with infected dromedary camels. WHO expects that additional cases of MERS-CoV infection will be exported from countries where MERS-CoV is circulating in dromedaries by travelers who may acquire infection after exposure to: 1) infected dromedaries or dromedary products (for example, following contact with camels); or 2) to infected humans (for example, in a health care setting).

All students receive a comprehensive liberal arts education across many different subjects. Students can choose among various classes offered in history, economics, literature, political science, business, and more.

Founded in 2008, Qatar Academy Al Khor (QAK) is situated in the coastal city of Al Khor, approximately 50 kilometres north of Doha. The school serves students from the age of 3 to 18 (EEC-grade 12) meeting the educational needs of the rapidly growing community of Al Khor.

Highly trained teachers work alongside Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists and School Psychologists to provide state-of-the-art instruction to students. Each year the school will add a grade level until students of all ages can be served.

In what can be called a belated move, the Supreme Education Council (SEC) has made it mandatory for all private schools in Qatar to include Qatari history in their curricula effective from the current academic year.

The SEC finally clarified that all private schools must teach Qatari history, while Arabic and Islamic Studies are compulsory for schools having Qatari students. The SEC also issued strict instructions to all schools to introduce the three subjects from the 2012-2013 academic year that started in September.

Arabic is the medium of instruction for Arabic and Islamic history for Qatari students. As for Qatari history, the medium should be Arabic for Arabic speaking students and English for students speaking other languages.

The schools are also required to provide an academic plan on how the three subjects will be taught in different grades and school terms. All the teachers in the three subjects should be qualified in their respective areas and the school should submit the relevant certificates to the SEC as a proof.

A few schools have already started teaching the subject from the beginning of the current academic year. There are also schools that have been teaching Qatari history over the past two years based on study material approved by the SEC.

The decision to make Qatari history part of the school curriculum assumes more significance since it can impart knowledge and create awareness among students in a systematic manner, feel many academics.

The SEC has prepared textbooks and activity books for the new subject for grades 1 to 12. However, study material for the higher secondary levels has not yet been distributed to the schools, said school sources.

Several parents and school officials have complained about the high price of the books. The textbook and the activity book for each grade together cost QR180, while the textbook alone is priced QR126.

A senior SEC official recently urged parents to collect the textbooks from the schools and make sure their schools comply with the SEC directive regarding the teaching of Qatari history, Arabic and Islamic Studies.

The Middle East constitutes a historic intersection of human civilization and migration1,2. The lack of sufficient whole-genome data from this region has limited large-scale analysis of its diversity and disease risk in Arab populations. Previous studies using hundreds of subjects gave insight to the history of these populations and impact of high consanguinity and tribalism on the prevalence of genetic diseases3,4,5,6,7,8. Indigenous Arabs were shown to form an outgroup to non-Africans and have little Neanderthal ancestry, suggesting their migration out of Africa instead of back to Africa9. Evidence from ancient human DNA suggested that the earliest populations of the Near East (which overlaps with contemporary Middle East), were derived from a Basal Eurasian lineage with minor Neanderthal admixture, and populated Anatolia, Levant and Iran prior to spreading to Europe, East Africa and Eurasian Stepp, respectively10. Iranian farmers arrived in Western Mediterranean by the Bronze age, during which this region was populated by a mix of Iranian, Steppe and North African ancestries11. The exact relationship between modern Arabs and the early founders of the ancient Near East remains unclear.

The Qatari population, with its history and geographical location (Fig. 1a), constitutes a representative subsection of the wider Arab Peninsula6,12,13,14. Here, we analyze the dataset from Phase 1 of the Qatar Genome Program (QGP) which aims to sequence the genomes of the population of Qatar ( ). We study its genetic structure in the context of regional history of admixture and migration, and build a reference panel to enable better genotype imputation for Arab and related ethnicities. There exist multiple reference panels from large-scale studies which improved imputation accuracy of low-frequency and rare variants15,16,17,18,19 ( -project.org; ; -panels/; ; -panels) including for specific populations20,21,22,23.
