Pillars of โ€˜Umrah:{1}

(1) Intention to assume the state of Ihraam. (2) Tawaaf. (3) Saโ€˜y.

If one leaves out any of those pillars, his โ€˜Umrah remains invalid until he performs it in the mode prescribed by Islamโ€™s teachings.{2}

Obligatory rites of โ€˜Umrah:

(1) Assuming Ihraam from any one of the meeqaat points if coming from beyond it. However, if someone resides between a meeqaat point and Makkah, he assumes Ihraam from wherever he sets out; and if someone resides within the boundary of the haram area, he assumes Ihraam from outside the haram area boundary.

(2) Shaving the head or shortening the hair upon exiting Ihraam. Males may either shave the hair on their heads or shorten it, and females are to shorten their hair by the length of a fingertip.

If one deliberately leaves out any of those obligatory rites, he commits a sin and he is to offer a sacrifice to Allaah as compensation. If one leaves any of them out unintentionally, he does not commit a sin but he is still to give the prescribed compensation.{3}

Recommended acts during โ€˜Umrah:

The recommended acts are all the elements of โ€˜Umrah besides the pillars and the obligatory rites. They include ghusl (washing the entire body), males applying fragrance to the body; males wearing a white izaar (for the lower half of the body) and ridaaโ€™ (for the upper half of the body); assuming the state of Ihraam after performing an obligatory prayer, or after a prescribed supererogatory prayer such as two units of prayer after certain obligatory prayers, or after performing wudooโ€™; saying the Talbiyah and other prescribed words for mentioning Allaah when assuming the state of Ihraam; males uncovering the right shoulder during the circuits of Tawaaf; males walking briskly with short steps during the first three circuits of Tawaaf; kissing the Black Stone, or using the right hand to touch it or point to it; mentioning Allaah and calling upon Him; standing on as-Safaa and al-Marwah hills; supplicating Allaah at as-Safaa and al-Marwah hills; and males running between the two designated green markers during Saโ€˜y.

If one leaves out any of the recommended acts, he does not commit any sin but he does miss out on attaining additional rewards.{4}

Prohibited acts while in Ihraam:

(1) Removing hair. (2) Clipping nails. (3) Applying fragrances. (4) Hunting. (5) Marriage contracts. (6) Intercourse. (7) Forms of intimacy other than intercourse. (8) Males wearing any garment specifically tailored to fit either the entire body or just a portion of the body. (9) Males covering the head. (10) Females covering the face with a niqaab or anything else specifically tailored to fit the face and leave an opening for the eyes. (11) Wearing gloves.{5}

Forms of compensation for committing prohibited acts while in the state of Ihraam:

โ— In the case of intercourse, a sheep is to be offered to Allaah as a sacrifice. Additionally, oneโ€™s performance of โ€˜Umrah in this case is invalidated, but one must still complete it and he is also to perform another โ€˜Umrah in its place.

In the case of hunting, a sacrifice comparable to the animal hunted is to be offered.

In the case of marriage contracts, there is no prescribed compensation to be given.

โ— For all the other prohibited acts mentioned, if done out of forgetfulness or ignorance, one is to desist when he remembers or knows of its prohibition, and he does not have to give any compensation; but if done wilfully and without any legitimate excuse, the compensation that applies is any one of three choices: fasting three days, feeding six needy people, or offering a sheep as a sacrifice in Makkah or at the location where the prohibition was committed.

A short description of โ€˜Umrah:{6}

โ— Upon reaching the meeqaat point, it is recommended to perform ghusl (wash the entire body), and for males to apply fragrance to the body. These are done prior to making the intention to assume the state of Ihraam.

โ— In the state of Ihraam, a male is to wear an izaar (for the lower half of the body) and a ridaaโ€™ (for the upper half of the body), and it is recommended that they both be white and clean.

โ— In the state of Ihraam, a female may wear any normal attire that covers her as prescribed by Islamโ€™s teachings, with the exception of the aforementioned garments that are prohibited during Ihraam.

โ— Within the heart, one is to intend that he is beginning the rites of โ€˜Umrah or Hajj that he has set out to perform, and it is permissible to verbalize that as well. If one intends to perform โ€˜Umrah, he may say,

โ€œO Allaah, I obediently respond to Your call to perform โ€˜Umrah.โ€

โ— Upon reaching al-Masjid al-Haraam (the Grand Mosque in Makkah), it is recommended to enter with oneโ€™s right foot and say:

โ€œIn every name of Allaah, and may Allaah grant commendation and protection to His Messenger.โ€{7}

โ€œI seek refuge in Allaah, the Most Magnificent; in His noble face; and in His eternal dominance, against shaytaan the outcast.โ€{8}

โ€œO Allaah, I implore You to open for me the gates of Your mercy.โ€{9}

โ— One proceeds to the Black Stone in order to begin Tawaaf. He touches the Black Stone with his right hand. He kisses the Stone if able to do so; but if not, he kisses his hand if he touched the Stone with his hand. If unable to touch the Black Stone, he turns towards it, points towards it with his hand, says (Allaah is the Greatest), and does not kiss his hand. The most virtuous approach is to not crowd or push anyone, so as to avoid both causing others harm and being harmed by others.

When touching the Black Stone, one is to say,

โ€œIn every name of Allaah, and Allaah is the Greatest.โ€

โ— After turning toward the Black Stone, one then proceeds to his right to begin Tawaaf and he keeps the Kaโ€˜bah to his left. When he reaches the Yemeni Corner of the Kaโ€˜bah, he is to touch it; and it is not prescribed to kiss the Corner, point towards it, say ุงู„ู„ู‘ูŽู‡ู ุฃูŽูƒู’ุจูŽุฑู (Allaah is the Greatest), or crowd anyone around it.

While in Tawaaf between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, one is to say,

((Our Lord, we beseech You to grant us good in this world, grant us good in the hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the hellfire)) [2:201], as authentically narrated from Allaahโ€™s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection).

From the beginning of Tawaaf until its end, a male is to uncover his right shoulder. After completing Tawaaf, he is to cover both shoulders.

In the first three circuits of Tawaaf, a male is to walk briskly with short steps.

โ— After one completes seven circuits of Tawaaf, he then goes to the Maqaam Ibraaheem (a location where the Prophet Ibraaheem stood) and then performs two units of prayer. If unable to pray there, one can do so in any other part of the Masjid. In the first unit of prayer, one reads Sooratul-Faatihah and then Sooratul-Kaafiroon; and in the second unit, one reads Sooratul-Faatihah and then Sooratul-Ikhlaas.

โ— One then proceeds to the hill called as-Safaa and reads the passage of the Qurโ€™aan,

((Indeed, the hills as-Safaa and al-Marwah are among the defining marks of Allaahโ€™s religion which He designated as sites where He is to be worshipped. Thus, when someone comes to this House for Hajj or โ€˜Umrah, there is no sin upon him for performing Saโ€˜y between the two of them)) [2:158].

โ— Upon reaching as-Safaa, one stands on it such that he can see the Kaโ€˜bah. He faces the Kaโ€˜bah, raises his two hands in supplication, praises Allaah, and calls upon Allaah using the words authentically narrated from the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection),

โ€œThere is none worthy of worship except Allaah alone, without any partner. To Him alone belong all dominion and praise, and He is able to do all things. There is none worthy of worship except Allaah alone. He fulfilled His promise, aided His worshipping servant, and vanquished the alliance of enemies by Himself.โ€ One is to repeat that three times and also supplicate Allaah further in between.

โ— One then performs seven laps of Saโ€˜y. From as-Safaa to al-Marwah is one lap, then from al-Marwah to as-Safaa is a second lap.

In the area between the designated green markers, a male is to run, but without causing any harm to others around him. That is to be done in all seven laps.

โ— After completing Saโ€˜y, a male is to either shave the hair on his head or shorten it, and a female is to gather her hair and cut the length of a fingertip (about 2 or 3 cm) from the end.

โ— With that, the rites of โ€˜Umrah are completed, one exits the state of Ihraam, and the acts that were impermissible during Ihraam return to being permissible.

May Allaah grant commendation and protection to our Prophet Muhammad, as well as to all of the Prophetโ€™s family and Companions.

I ask You for the good of all that You know, I seek refuge in You from the evil of all that You know, and I ask Your forgiveness for all that You know. Indeed, You have full knowledge of all things unseen.

My Lord, assist me and do not assist against me. Grant me victory and do not grant victory over me. Plot in my favour and do not plot against me. Guide me and facilitate the means to guidance for me. Grant me victory over those who transgress against me. My Lord, make me constantly grateful to You, constantly mentioning and remembering You, constantly fearful of You, constantly obedient to You, constantly humble before You, and constantly repentant to You. My Lord, accept my repentance, wash away my misdeeds, answer my prayers, make my proof firm, set my tongue aright, guide my heart, and remove rancour from my chest.

O Allaah, all praise belongs to You. None can restrict what You spread forth, and none can spread forth what You restrict. None can guide anyone You allow to stray, and none can lead astray anyone You guide. None can bestow what You withhold, and none can withhold what You bestow. None can draw near what You distance, and none can distance what You draw near. O Allaah, grant us Your blessings, mercy, bounty, and provisions in abundance. O Allaah, I earnestly implore You to grant me lasting blessings which will never change or come to an end. O Allaah, I earnestly implore You for Your bounty on the day of dire need, and for security on the day of fear. O Allaah, I earnestly seek refuge with You from the evil in anything You have given us, and from the evil in anything You have withheld. O Allaah, make Eemaan beloved to us and beautify it in our hearts. Make kufr, sins, and disobedience detested to us, and make us among those who are rightly guided. O Allaah, allow us to die submitting to You in Islaam and allow us to live submitting to You in Islaam. Join us with the righteous without subjecting us to disgrace or trials. O Allaah, fight those who reject You โ€“ those who have rejected Your Messengers and obstructed others from Your path โ€“ and send Your wrath and torment upon them. O Allaah, fight those to whom You have revealed scriptures, yet they reject You. I implore You, Lord of truth and justice.
