Chapter about calling upon Allaah

بَابُ فَضْلِ الدُّعَاءِ

Section about virtues of calling upon Allaah

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: مَنْ لَمْ يَدْعُ اللَّهَ سُبْحَانَهُ، غَضِبَ عَلَيْهِ.

[3827] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated that Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “When a person does not call upon Allaah, who is perfect in every way, Allaah will be angry with that person.”

عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنَّ الدُّعَاءَ هُوَ الْعِبَادَةُ. ثُمَّ قَرَأَ: ((وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ)).

[3828] an-Nu‘maan ibn Basheer [(may Allaah be pleased with both of them)] stated that Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “Indeed, calling upon Allaah is what worship is,” and he then read the passage of the Qur’aan saying, ((And your Lord said: Call upon Me, I will respond to you)) [40:60].

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: لَيْسَ شَيْءٌ أَكْرَمَ عَلَى اللَّهِ سُبْحَانَهُ مِنْ الدُّعَاءِ.

[3829] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “There is nothing more honourable to Allaah, who is perfect in every way, than calling upon Him.”

بَابُ دُعَاءِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

Section about supplications used by Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) to call upon Allaah

عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ فِي دُعَائِهِ: رَبِّ أَعِنِّي وَلَا تُعِنْ عَلَيَّ، وَانْصُرْنِي وَلَا تَنْصُرْ عَلَيَّ، وَامْكُرْ لِي وَلَا تَمْكُرْ عَلَيَّ، وَاهْدِنِي وَيَسِّرِ الْهُدَى لِي، وَانْصُرْنِي عَلَى مَنْ بَغَى عَلَيَّ، رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي لَكَ شَكَّارًا، لَكَ ذَكَّارًا، لَكَ رَهَّابًا، لَكَ مُطِيعًا، إِلَيْكَ مُخْبِتًا، إِلَيْكَ أَوَّاهًا مُنِيبًا، رَبِّ تَقَبَّلْ تَوْبَتِي، وَاغْسِلْ حَوْبَتِي، وَأَجِبْ دَعْوَتِي، وَاهْدِ قَلْبِي، وَسَدِّدْ لِسَانِي، وَثَبِّتْ حُجَّتِي، وَاسْلُلْ سَخِيمَةَ قَلْبِي. قَالَ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ الطَّنَافِسِيُّ: قُلْتُ لِوَكِيعٍ: أَقُولُهُ فِي قُنُوتِ الْوِتْرِ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ.

[3830] [‘Abdullaah] ibn ‘Abbaas [(may Allaah be pleased with both of them)] narrated that the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) used to say the following in his supplication: My Lord, assist me, and do not assist against me; grant me victory, and do not grant victory over me; plot in my favour, and do not plot against me; guide me, and facilitate the means to guidance for me; and support me against those who have transgressed against me. My Lord, make me someone who is very grateful to You, mentions You much, has much reverential fear of of You, obeys You, is humble before You, repents to You, and returns to You in all matters. My Lord, accept my repentance, wash away my sins, respond to my call, guide my heart, make my tongue speak words that are correct, establish my proof firmly, and remove rancour from within my heart.

[The complier – ibn Maajah – added that] Abul-Hasan at-Tanaafisee [the scholar from whom ibn Maajah narrated this hadeeth] said: I had asked Wakee‘ [that being the scholar from whom at-Tanaafisee himself narrated the hadeeth], “Should I say this in the qunoot supplication of the witr prayer?” He replied, “Yes.”

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: أَتَتْ فَاطِمَةُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَسْأَلُهُ خَادِمًا، فَقَالَ لَهَا: مَا عِنْدِي مَا أُعْطِيكِ. فَرَجَعَتْ، فَأَتَاهَا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: الَّذِي سَأَلْتِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكِ، أَوْ مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ؟ فَقَالَ لَهَا عَلِيٌّ: قُولِي: لَا، بَلْ مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنْهُ. فَقَالَتْ. فَقَالَ: قُولِي: اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَرَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، رَبَّنَا وَرَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ، مُنَزِّلَ التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنْجِيلِ وَالْقُرْآنِ الْعَظِيمِ، أَنْتَ الْأَوَّلُ فَلَيْسَ قَبْلَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْآخِرُ فَلَيْسَ بَعْدَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الظَّاهِرُ فَلَيْسَ فَوْقَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْبَاطِنُ فَلَيْسَ دُونَكَ شَيْءٌ، اقْضِ عَنَّا الدَّيْنَ وَأَغْنِنَا مِنْ الْفَقْرِ.

[3831] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Faatimah came to the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) to ask him for a servant, and he told her, “There is nothing with me that I can give you.” So she then returned to her home. Later on, he went to her there and said, “Is what you asked for more beloved to you, or something better than it?” ‘Alee [her husband, who was present at the time,] said to her, “Reply by saying: not what I asked for; rather, something better than it” and Faatimah gave that reply. The Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) then said, “Say the following: O Allaah, Lord of the seven heavens; Lord of the magnificent throne; our Lord; the Lord of absolutely everything; and the One who sent down the scriptures known as the Tawraah, the Injeel, and the magnificent Qur’aan. You are the One before all things, and nothing is before You; You are the One after all things, and nothing is after You; You are the One above all things, and nothing is above You; and You are the One unobstructed from all things, and nothing can obstruct You. I implore You to settle our debts, and to enrich us so that we are spared from poverty.”

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى.

[3832] ‘Abdullaah [ibn Mas‘ood (may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) would supplicate Allaah by saying, “O Allaah, I ardently beseech You to grant me guidance, fulfillment of Your commands and avoidance of Your prohibitions, restraint from what is not permissible for me, and enrichment of my soul as well as independence of means.”

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ انْفَعْنِي بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي، وَعَلِّمْنِي مَا يَنْفَعُنِي، وَزِدْنِي عِلْمًا.

[3833] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) would supplicate Allaah by saying, “O Allaah, benefit me by what You have taught me, teach me what benefits me, and increase me in knowledge.”

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَقُولَ: اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ. فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، تَخَافُ عَلَيْنَا وَقَدْ آمَنَّا بِكَ وَصَدَّقْنَاكَ بِمَا جِئتَ بِهِ؟ فَقَالَ: إِنَّ الْقُلُوبَ بَيْنَ إِصْبَعَيْنِ مِن أَصَابِعِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يُقَلِّبُهَا. وَأَشَارَ الْأَعْمَشُ بِإِصْبَعَيْهِ.

[3834] Anas ibn Maalik [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) would often supplicate by saying, “O Allaah, make my heart steadfast in adhering to Your religion.” Consequently, a man inquired, “Messenger of Allaah, do you fear for us even though we have accepted you as Allaah’s Messenger and unwaveringly believed in the truth of the Message that you brought?” He replied, “The hearts of all people are between two of the fingers of Allaah, the Almighty and Most Majestic: the Possessor of Limitless Mercy. He is the One who turns their hearts from one state to another.”

Al-A‘mash [one of the subnarrators] gestured with two of his fingers, indicating that this is something real, not figurative.

عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: عَلِّمْنِي دُعَاءً أَدْعُو بِهِ فِي صَلَاتِي. قَالَ: قُلْ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي ظُلْمًا كَثِيرًا، وَلَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَغْفِرَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ وَارْحَمْنِي، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ.

[3835] Aboo Bakr as-Siddeeq [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] had said to Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection), “Teach me words of supplication that I can use to call upon Allaah when I perform my prayers.” He replied, “Say the following: O Allaah, I have certainly wronged myself greatly, and none forgives sins except You. Thus, I beseech You to grant me forgiveness from Yourself and to have mercy upon me. Indeed, You are the One who is the Most Forgiving, the Bestower of Mercy.”

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ الْأَرْبَعِ: مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ، وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لَا يَخْشَعُ، وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ لَا تَشْبَعُ، وَمِنْ دُعَاءٍ لَا يُسْمَعُ.

[3837] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) would supplicate by saying, “O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from these four things: knowledge that is of no benefit, a heart devoid of finding tranquility with You, a soul that is unsatisfied, and a supplication that is not heard.”

بَابُ مَا تَعَوَّذَ مِنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

Section about what Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) sought refuge from

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَدْعُو بِهَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ النَّارِ وَعَذَابِ النَّارِ، وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْقَبْرِ وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْغِنَى وَشَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْفَقْرِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْسِلْ خَطَايَايَ بِمَاءِ الثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ، وَنَقِّ قَلْبِي مِنَ الْخَطَايَا كَمَا نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوْبَ الْأَبْيَضَ مِنَ الدَّنَسِ، وَبَاعِدْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ خَطَايَايَ كَمَا بَاعَدْتَ بَيْنَ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْهَرَمِ، وَالْمَأْثَمِ وَالْمَغْرَمِ.

[3838] ‘Aa’ishah [(may Allaah be pleased with her)] narrated that the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) would supplicate Allaah using the following words: O Allaah, I certainly seek refuge with You from the trial of the hellfire and the punishment of the hellfire, from the trial of the grave and the punishment of the grave, from the evils of the trial of affluence and the evils of the trial of poverty, and from the evils of the trial of al-Maseeh ad-Dajjaal. O Allaah, wash away my sins with water from ice and hail, cleanse my heart of sins as You cleanse a white garment from impurities, and distance me from my sins as You have distanced the east from the west. O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from laziness, senility, sinfulness, and being in debt.”

عَنْ فَرْوَةَ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ عَنْ دُعَاءٍ كَانَ يَدْعُو بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَتْ: كَانَ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا عَمِلْتُ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا لَمْ أَعْمَلْ.

[3839] Farwah ibn Nawfal said: I asked ‘Aa’ishah [(may Allaah be pleased with her)] about a supplication that the Messenger of Allaah (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) would always say. She replied, “He would say the following: O Allaah, I seek refuge with You from the evils of what I have done and from the evils of what I have not done.”

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعَلِّمُنَا هَذَا الدُّعَاءَ كَمَا يُعَلِّمُنَا السُّورَةَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ.

[3840] [‘Abdullaah] ibn ‘Abbaas [(may Allaah be pleased with both of them)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) used to teach us the following supplication just as he would teach us a soorah from the Qur’aan, “O Allaah, I certainly seek refuge with You from the punishment of the hellfire, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, I seek refuge with You from the trials of al-Maseeh ad-Dajjaal, and I seek refuge with You from the trials of life and death.”

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ: فَقَدْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ مِنْ فِرَاشِهِ، فَالْتَمَسْتُهُ، فَوَقَعَتْ يَدِي عَلَى بَطْنِ قَدَمَيْهِ وَهُوَ فِي الْمَسْجَدِ، وَهُمَا مَنْصُوبَتَانِ، وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ، وَبِمُعَافَاتِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ، لَا أُحْصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ، أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ.

[3841] ‘Aa’ishah [(may Allaah be pleased with her)] stated: One night, I found that Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) was missing from his place where he slept [beside me]; so I reached to feel for him, and my hand touched the soles of his two feet. He was prostrating in prayer with his feet upright, and he was saying, “O Allaah, I seek refuge in You being pleased from You being displeased, and in the wellbeing You grant from the punishment You inflict. I also seek refuge with You from Yourself. I cannot praise You sufficiently. You are as You have praised Yourself.”

عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: سَلُوا اللَّهَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَتَعَوَّذُوا بِاللَّهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لَا يَنْفَعُ.

[3843] Jaabir [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “Beseech Allaah for beneficial knowledge and seek refuge with Allaah from knowledge that is of no benefit.”

بَابُ الْجَوَامِعِ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ

Section containing some comprehensive supplications

عَنْ طَارِقٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَدْ أَتَاهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، كَيْفَ أَقُولُ حِينَ أَسْأَلُ رَبِّي؟ قَالَ: قُلْ: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَعَافِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي - وَجَمَعَ أَصَابِعَهُ الْأَرْبَعَ إِلَّا الْإِبْهَامَ -؛ فَإِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ يَجْمَعْنَ لَكَ دِينَكَ وَدُنْيَاكَ.

[3845] Taariq [ibn Ashyam (may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that he heard the reply given by the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) when a man once came and asked, “Messenger of Allaah, what should I say when I ask of my Lord?” The reply he gave was, “Say: O Allaah, grant me forgiveness, grant me mercy, grant me wellbeing, and grant me provision.” In addition, he put together his four fingers except for his thumb and he said, “These words put together for you all matters of your religion and your life in this world.”

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَّمَهَا هَذَا الدُّعَاءَ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ كُلِّهِ عَاجِلِهِ وَآجِلِهِ، مَا عَلِمْتُ مِنْهُ وَمَا لَمْ أَعْلَمْ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ كُلِّهِ عَاجِلِهِ وَآجِلِهِ، مَا عَلِمْتُ مِنْهُ وَمَا لَمْ أَعْلَمْ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِ مَا سَأَلَكَ عَبْدُكَ وَنَبِيُّكَ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا عَاذَ بِهِ عَبْدُكَ وَنَبِيُّكَ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْجَنَّةَ وَمَا قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ عَمَلٍ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ وَمَا قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ عَمَلٍ، وَأَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تَجْعَلَ كُلَّ قَضَاءٍ قَضَيْتَهُ لِي خَيْرًا.

[3846] ‘Aa’ishah [(may Allaah be pleased with her)] narrated that Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) taught her the following words of supplication: O Allaah, I certainly implore You for all good things in the short term and the long term – the ones I do know about, and the ones I do not; and I also certainly seek refuge with You from all bad things in the short term and the long term – the ones I do know about, and the ones I do not. O Allaah, I certainly implore You for the good of all that Your worshipping servant and Prophet asked You for, and I certainly seek refuge with You from the bad of all that Your worshiping servant and Prophet sought refuge from. O Allaah, I certainly implore You for Jannah and for every word or deed that takes one closer to it, and I seek refuge with You from the hellfire and from every word or deed that takes one closer to it; and I implore You to make all things that You decree to come about concerning me ones that would be good.”

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِرَجُلٍ: مَا تَقُولُ فِي الصَّلَاةِ؟ قَالَ: أَتَشَهَّدُ، ثُمَّ أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَعُوذُ بِهِ مِنَ النَّارِ؛ أَمَا وَاللَّهِ، مَا أُحْسِنُ دَنْدَنَتَكَ، وَلَا دَنْدَنَةَ مُعَاذٍ. قَالَ: [حَوْلَهُمَا] نُدَنْدِنُ.

[3847] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) had asked a man, “What words do you say during your prayer [i.e. when the words of the imaam leading the prayer are inaudible to you)?] The man replied, “I say that I testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah; then, I beseech Allaah for Jannah and I seek refuge with Him from the hellfire. Furthermore, I hope that you will give consideration to the following: I swear by Allaah that neither do I know what you say in a lowered voice when you lead us in prayer, nor do I know what Mu‘aath ibn Jabal says in a lowered voice when he leads us in prayer; thus, I cannot say the same.” Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) told the man, “The words we say are about those same two things [i.e. beseeching Allaah for Jannah and seeking refuge with Him from the hellfire].”

بَابُ الدُّعَاءِ بِالْعَفْوِ وَالْعَافِيَةِ

Section about supplicating Allaah for pardon and wellbeing

عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ حِينَ قُبِضَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: قَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا عَامَ الْأَوَّلِ - ثُمَّ بَكَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ - ثُمَّ قَالَ: عَلَيْكُمْ بِالصِّدْقِ، فَإِنَّهُ مَعَ الْبِرِّ وَهُمَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ، وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْكَذِبَ، فَإِنَّهُ مَعَ الْفُجُورِ وَهُمَا فِي النَّارِ، وَسَلُوا اللَّهَ الْمُعَافَاةَ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يُؤْتَ أَحَدٌ بَعْدَ الْيَقِينِ خَيْرًا مِنَ الْمُعَافَاةِ، وَلَا تَحَاسَدُوا، وَلَا تَبَاغَضُوا، وَلَا تَقَاطَعُوا، وَلَا تَدَابَرُوا، وَكُونُوا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ إِخْوَانًا.

[3849] When the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) passed away, Aboo Bakr [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] addressed the congregation by saying, “Allaah’s Messenger himself (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) stood last year in this very location where I am now standing.” Aboo Bakr then wept, and he continued by saying that Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) then said, “You must steadfastly continue to be honest, since it goes along with righteousness, and the two of them lead to Jannah. In addition, you must keep away from being dishonest, since it goes along with sinfulness, and the two of them lead to the hellfire. You must also beseech Allaah for wellbeing, since after being granted certainty about the truth from Allaah, no one is granted anything that is better than wellbeing. You must not hope that others be deprived of blessings they have, you must not hate one another, you must not sever ties with one another, and you must not turn your backs on one another; and servants of Allaah, you must be brothers to each other.”

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ وَافَقْتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ مَا أَدْعُو؟ قَالَ: تَقُولِينَ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي.

[3850] ‘Aa’ishah [(may Allaah be pleased with her)] had said, “Messenger of Allaah, I would like you to inform me about the following: if I knew exactly which night Laylatul-Qadr was (the Night of Decree) what words of supplication should I say during it?” He replied, “Say: O Allaah, the One who continually pardons Your servants, You love pardoning; thus, I beseech you to pardon me.”

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: مَا مِنْ دَعْوَةٍ يَدْعُو بِهَا الْعَبْدُ أَفْضَلَ مِنْ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْمُعَافَاةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ.

[3851] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “No words of supplication that a worshipping servant can say are more virtuous than: O Allaah, I certainly implore You for wellbeing in this world and the hereafter.”

بَابٌ: يُسْتَجَابُ لِأَحَدِكُمْ مَا لَمْ يَعْجَلْ

Section: The call any one of you makes will be responded to by Allaah so long as you do not become hasty regarding the response that you seek

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: يُسْتَجَابُ لِأَحَدِكُمْ مَا لَمْ يَعْجَلْ. قِيلَ: وَكَيْفَ يَعْجَلُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ قَالَ: يَقُولُ: قَدْ دَعَوْتُ اللَّهَ فَلَمْ يَسْتَجِبِ اللَّهُ لِي.

[3853] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “The call any one of you makes will be responded to by Allaah so long as you do not become hasty regarding the response that you seek.” Someone present asked, “What does becoming hasty mean, Messenger of Allaah?” He replied, “When a person says, ‘I called upon Allaah, but Allaah did not respond to me’.”

بَابٌ: لَا يَقُولُ الرَّجُلُ: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي إِنْ شِئْتَ

Section: A person is not to say, “O Allaah, forgive me if You want to” (as though one does not really need Allaah or His forgiveness)

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: لَا يَقُولَنَّ أَحَدُكُمْ: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي إِنْ شِئْتَ، وَلْيَعْزِمْ فِي الْمَسْأَلَةِ؛ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا مُكْرِهَ لَهُ.

[3854] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “No one among you should ever say, ‘O Allaah forgive me if You want to’; rather, one must ask with firm resolve since there is no one who can force Allaah to do anything.”

بَابٌ: اسْمُ اللَّهِ الْأَعْظَمُ

Section about the Most Magnificent Name of Allaah

عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ بِنْتِ يَزِيدَ قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: اسْمُ اللَّهِ الْأَعْظَمُ فِي هَاتَيْنِ الْآيَتَيْنِ: ((وَإِلَهُكُمْ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الرَّحْمَنُ الرَّحِيمُ))، وَفَاتِحَةِ سُورَةِ آلِ عِمْرَانَ.

[3855] Asmaa’ bint Yazeed [(may Allaah be pleased with her)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “The Most Magnificent Name of Allaah is in the following two passages of the Qur’aan: One is the passage that says, ((And the One whom you must worship is One God, none has the right to be worshipped except Him. He is the Possessor of Limitless Mercy, the Bestower of Mercy)) [2:163]. The other passage is the beginning of Sooratu Aali ‘Imraan.”

عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: اسْمُ اللَّهِ الْأَعْظَمُ الَّذِي إِذَا دُعِيَ بِهِ أَجَابَ فِي سُوَرٍ ثَلَاثٍ: الْبَقَرَةِ، وَآلِ عِمْرَانَ، وَطه.

[3856] Aboo Umaamah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “The Most Magnificent Name of Allaah – when called upon by it He responds – is in three chapters of the Qur’aan: al-Baqarah, Aali ‘Imraan, and Taa-Haa.”

عَنْ بُرَيْدَةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلًا يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنَّكَ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ الْأَحَدُ الصَّمَدُ، الَّذِي لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: لَقَدْ سَأَلَ اللَّهَ بِاسْمِهِ الْأَعْظَمِ، الَّذِي إِذَا سُئِلَ بِهِ أَعْطَى، وَإِذَا دُعِيَ بِهِ أَجَابَ.

[3857] Buraydah [ibn al-Husayb (may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) heard a man say, “O Allaah, I certainly implore You due to the fact that You are Allaah, the Unique, the One to whom all creatures must resort for their needs, the One who has no offspring and is not the offspring of anyone, and the One to whom none is comparable.” Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) then said, “That man indeed implored Allaah using Allaah’s Most Magnificent Name – when asked by it, He grants; and when called upon by it, He responds.”

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ: سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلًا يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدَ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، وَحْدَكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ، الْمَنَّانُ، بَدِيعُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ، ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ. فَقَالَ: لَقَدْ سَأَلَ اللَّهَ بِاسْمِهِ الْأَعْظَمِ، الَّذِي إِذَا سُئِلَ بِهِ أَعْطَى، وَإِذَا دُعِيَ بِهِ أَجَابَ.

[3858] Anas ibn Maalik [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated that the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) heard a man say, “O Allaah, I certainly implore You due to the fact that all praise is due to You alone; none has the right to be worshipped except You alone, without any partner. You are the Bestower of abundant favours, the Originator of the heavens and the Earth, the owner of all majesty and honour.” The Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) then said, “That man indeed implored Allaah using Allaah’s Most Magnificent Name – when asked by it, He grants; and when called upon by it, He responds.”

بَابُ أَسْمَاءِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

Section about the names of Allaah, the Almighty and Most Majestic

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِنَّ لِلَّهِ تِسْعَةً وَتِسْعِينَ اسْمًا، مِائَةً إِلَّا وَاحِدًا، مَنْ أَحْصَاهَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ.

[3860] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “There are indeed ninety-nine names that Allaah has – one less than a hundred. Anyone who encompasses those names would be admitted to Jannah.”

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: إِنَّ لِلَّهِ تِسْعَةً وَتِسْعِينَ اسْمًا، مِائَةً إِلَّا وَاحِدًا، إِنَّهُ وِتْرٌ، يُحِبُّ الْوِتْرَ، مَنْ حَفِظَهَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ.

[3861] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “There are indeed ninety-nine names that Allaah has – one less than a hundred. Furthermore, Allaah is indeed unique and He loves for His uniqueness to be affirmed. Anyone who preserves those names would be admitted to Jannah.”

بَابُ دَعْوَةِ الْوَالِدِ وَدَعْوَةِ الْمَظْلُومِ

Section about the supplication of a parent and the supplication of a person who has been wronged

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ثَلَاثُ دَعَوَاتٍ يُسْتَجَابُ لَهُنَّ، لَا شَكَّ فِيهِنَّ: دَعْوَةُ الْمَظْلُومِ، وَدَعْوَةُ الْمُسَافِرِ، وَدَعْوَةُ الْوَالِدِ لِوَلَدِهِ.

[3862] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “There are three supplications that are undoubtedly answered: the supplication of a person who has been wronged, the supplication of the traveller, and the supplication of a parent for their child.”

بَابُ كَرَاهِيَةِ الِاعْتِدَاءِ فِي الدُّعَاءِ

Section about the prohibition of transgressing the prescribed bounds when calling upon Allaah

عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُغَفَّلٍ سَمِعَ ابْنَهُ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْقَصْرَ الْأَبْيَضَ عَنْ يَمِينِ الْجَنَّةِ إِذَا دَخَلْتُهَا. فَقَالَ: أَيْ بُنَيَّ، سَلِ اللَّهَ الْجَنَّةَ، وَعُذْ بِهِ مِنَ النَّارِ؛ فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: سَيَكُونُ قَوْمٌ يَعْتَدُونَ فِي الدُّعَاءِ.

[3863] ‘Abdullaah ibn Mughaffal [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] heard his son say, “O Allaah, I certainly implore You for the white palace on the right side of Jannah, if I am admitted to Jannah.” As a result, ‘Abdullaah ibn Mughaffal said, “My beloved young son, implore Allaah for Jannah and seek refuge with Him from the hellfire, as I indeed heard Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) say, ‘There will be people who will transgress the prescribed bounds when calling upon Allaah’.”

بَابُ رَفْعِ الْيَدَيْنِ فِي الدُّعَاءِ

Section about raising the two hands when supplicating Allaah

عَنْ سَلْمَانَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: إِنَّ رَبَّكُمْ حَيِيٌّ كَرِيمٌ، يَسْتَحْيِي مِنْ عَبْدِهِ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ إِلَيْهِ يَدَيْهِ، فَيَرُدَّهُمَا صِفْرًا، - أَوْ قَالَ: خَائِبَتَيْنِ -.

[3865] Salmaan [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “Indeed, your Lord is ashamed of particular things, and He is Most Generous: He is ashamed to have a worshipping servant of His raise his two hands to Him in supplication, yet turn that servant’s two hands back empty” or he said, “deprived of what they sought”.

بَابُ مَا يَدْعُو بِهِ الرَّجُلُ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ وَإِذَا أَمْسَى

Section about words of supplication to be said upon reaching the morning and reaching the evening

عَنْ أَبِي عَيَّاشٍ الزُّرَقِيِّ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يُصْبِحُ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ، وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ - كَانَ لَهُ عَدْلَ رَقَبَةٍ مِنْ وَلَدِ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، وَحُطَّ عَنْهُ عَشْرُ خَطِيئَاتٍ، وَرُفِعَ لَهُ عَشْرُ دَرَجَاتٍ، وَكَانَ فِي حِرْزٍ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ حَتَّى يُمْسِيَ، وَإِذَا أَمْسَى فَمِثْلُ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى يُصْبِحَ.

[3867] Aboo ‘Ayyaash az-Zuraqee [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “If any person says the following supplication upon reaching the morning: None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah alone, without any partner. To Him alone belongs all dominion, to Him alone belongs all praise, and He is completely able to do all things – that person would receive a reward equivalent to the reward for freeing a slave among the descendants of the Prophet Ismaa‘eel, ten misdeeds would be pardoned for him, he would be raised ten ranks, and he would be granted protection against shaytaan until he reaches the evening. In addition, if he says the same upon reaching the evening, he will have the same until he reaches the morning.”

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِذَا أَصْبَحْتُمْ فَقُولُوا: اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا، وَبِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا، وَبِكَ نَحْيَا، وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ، وَإِذَا أَمْسَيْتُمْ فَقُولُوا: اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا، وَبِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا، وَبِكَ نَحْيَا، وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ، وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ.

[3868] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “When you reach the morning, say: O Allaah, it is by You alone that we have reached the morning, and by You alone that we reach the evening. It is also by You alone that we live and by You alone that we die. In addition, when you reach the evening say: O Allaah, it is by You alone that we have reached the evening, and by You alone that we reach the morning. It is also by You alone that we live and by You alone that we die, and to You alone will be our final return.”

عَنْ أَبَانَ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَقُولُ فِي صَبَاحِ كُلِّ يَوْمٍ، وَمَسَاءِ كُلِّ لَيْلَةٍ: بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ، وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ، ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، فَيَضُرَّهُ شَيْءٌ. قَالَ: وَكَانَ أَبَانُ قَدْ أَصَابَهُ طَرَفٌ مِنَ الْفَالِجِ، فَجَعَلَ الرَّجُلُ يَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ أَبَانُ: مَا تَنْظُرُ إِلَيَّ؟ أَمَا إِنَّ الْحَدِيثَ كَمَا قَدْ حَدَّثْتُكَ، وَلَكِنِّي لَمْ أَقُلْهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ، لِيُمْضِيَ اللَّهُ عَلَيَّ قَدَرَهُ.

[3869] Abaan ibn ‘Uthmaan said: I heard ‘Uthmaan ibn ‘Affaan [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] say, “I heard Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) say, ‘There is no servant of Allaah who says the following supplication thrice at the beginning of each morning, as well as the beginning of each evening, and would then be harmed by anything: In every name of Allaah – the One who when His names are resorted to for protection, nothing throughout the Earth or the sky causes harm – and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing’.”

One of the subnarrators added that Abaan had been affected by a mild degree of paralysis on one side of his body, and a man started staring at him. As a result, Abaan said to him, “Why are you staring at me like that? The hadeeth is exactly as I narrated it to you. However, as for myself, I did not say that supplication on the day this illness befell me, and the end result was that Allaah brought about His decree that He had preordained for me concerning this illness.”

عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ: لَمْ يَكُنْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدَعُ هَؤُلَاءِ الدَّعَوَاتِ حِينَ يُمْسِي، وَحِينَ يُصْبِحُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي دِينِي وَدُنْيَايَ وَأَهْلِي وَمَالِي، اللَّهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِي، وَآمِنْ رَوْعَاتِي، وَاحْفَظْنِي مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ، وَمِنْ خَلْفِي، وَعَنْ يَمِينِي، وَعَنْ شِمَالِي، وَمِنْ فَوْقِي، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُغْتَالَ مِنْ تَحْتِي. قَالَ وَكِيعٌ يَعْنِي الْخَسْفَ.

[3871] [‘Abdullaah] ibn ‘Umar [(may Allaah be pleased with both of them)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) would not at all neglect to say the following words of supplication whenever he reached the morning and whenever he reached the evening: O Allaah, I certainly implore You for pardon and wellbeing in this world and the hereafter. O Allaah, I certainly implore You for pardon and wellbeing in my religious affairs, my mundane affairs, my family, and my property. O Allaah, I implore You to conceal my faults; to calm my fears; and to protect me from in front of me, from behind me, from my right, from my left, and from above me; and I seek refuge with You from being infiltrated from beneath myself.”

Wakee‘ [of the subnarrators] explained being infiltrated from beneath by saying that it means the ground imploding.

عَنْ بُرَيْدَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ بِنِعْمَتِكَ، وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ. قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: مَنْ قَالَهَا فِي يَوْمِهِ وَلَيْلَتِهِ، فَمَاتَ فِي ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ، أَوْ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةِ، دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ، إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى.

[3872] Buraydah [ibn al-Husayb (may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “O Allaah, You are my Lord. None has the right to be worshipped except You. You created me, and I am Your worshipping servant. Furthermore, I continue to fulfil the covenant I have with You regarding sincerely obeying You and worshipping You alone, and I remain certain in the promise I have from You regarding the recompense of the hereafter, all to the utmost of my ability. I seek refuge with You from the evils of all that I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings and I also acknowledge my sins; thus, I beseech You to forgive me, as there is none who forgives sins except You.”

Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) added, “Anyone who says that in the day and the night, then passes away that day or that night, would be admitted to Jannah if Allaah – the Most Exalted – wills.”

بَابُ مَا يَدْعُو بِهِ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ

Section about words of supplication one should say when he goes to his place of sleep

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ: اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ، وَرَبَّ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ، فَالِقَ الْحَبِّ وَالنَّوَى، مُنْزِلَ التَّوْرَاةِ وَالْإِنْجِيلِ وَالْقُرْآنِ الْعَظِيمِ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ أَنْتَ آخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا، أَنْتَ الْأَوَّلُ فَلَيْسَ قَبْلَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْآخِرُ فَلَيْسَ بَعْدَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الظَّاهِرُ فَلَيْسَ فَوْقَكَ شَيْءٌ، وَأَنْتَ الْبَاطِنُ فَلَيْسَ دُونَكَ شَيْءٌ، اقْضِ عَنِّي الدَّيْنَ وَأَغْنِنِي مِنَ الْفَقْرِ.

[3873] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) would say the following words of supplication when he went to his place of sleep: O Allaah, Lord of the heavens and the Earth, and Lord of absolutely everything; the One who causes grains and seeds to split open and sprout; the One who sent down the scriptures known as the Tawraah, the Injeel, and the Magnificent Qur’aan. I seek refuge with You from the evils of every creature that moves about, since You are the One who has complete control and authority over them all. You are the One before all things and nothing is before You; You are the One after all things, and nothing is after You; You are the One above all things, and nothing is above You; You are the One unobstructed from all things, and nothing can obstruct You. I implore You to settle my debts and to enrich me so that I am spared from poverty.”

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: إِذَا أَرَادَ أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ يَضْطَجِعَ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَلْيَنْزِعْ دَاخِلَةَ إِزَارِهِ ثُمَّ لِيَنْفُضْ بِهَا فِرَاشَهُ؛ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي مَا خَلَفَهُ عَلَيْهِ، ثُمَّ لِيَضْطَجِعْ عَلَى شِقِّهِ الْأَيْمَنِ، ثُمَّ لِيَقُلْ: رَبِّ بِكَ وَضَعْتُ جَنْبِي، وَبِكَ أَرْفَعُهُ، فَإِنْ أَمْسَكْتَ نَفْسِي فَارْحَمْهَا، وَإِنْ أَرْسَلْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا بِمَا حَفِظْتَ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِينَ.

[3874] Aboo Hurayrah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “When anyone of you wants to lie down in his place of sleep, he is to hold a portion of the inner side of his lower garment so that it covers his hand, and then wipe off his bed with that since he does not know what harmful creature may have come to it since he was last there. Then, he is to lie down on his right side and then say: My Lord, it is by You that I have laid down my side, and it is by You that I raise it. Thus, if You take my soul, I beseech You to have mercy upon it; and if You return my soul, I beseech You to grant it the protection that You have granted Your righteous worshipping servants.”

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا أَخَذَ مَضْجَعَهُ نَفَثَ فِي يَدَيْهِ، وَقَرَأَ بِالْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ وَمَسَحَ بِهِمَا جَسَدَهُ.

[3875] ‘Aa’ishah [(may Allaah be pleased with her)] narrated that when the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) would take his place of sleep, he would blow lightly into his two hands, recite soorah al-Falaq and soorah an-Naas, and then wipe his two hands over his body.

عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ عَازِبٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِرَجُلٍ: إِذَا أَخَذْتَ مَضْجَعَكَ أَوْ أَوَيْتَ إِلَى فِرَاشِكَ فَقُلْ: اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ، وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ، وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ، رَغْبَةً وَرَهْبَةً إِلَيْكَ، لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَى مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ، آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ، وَنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ - فَإِنْ مِتَّ مِنْ لَيْلَتِكَ مِتَّ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ، وَإِنْ أَصْبَحْتَ أَصْبَحْتَ وَقَدْ أَصَبْتَ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا.

[3876] al-Baraa’ ibn ‘Aazib [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) once told a man, “When you take your place of sleep – or he said: when you go to your bed – say: ‘O Allaah, I have sincerely submitted myself to You, I have leaned upon You for support, and I have relegated all my affairs to You. I have done those hoping for Your reward and fearing Your punishment. There is no fleeing or escaping from You except by taking resort to You. I accept and comply with the directives of Your Book that You have sent down and Your Prophet whom You have sent.’ If you say those words of supplication then die that night, you would die upon the innate disposition that Allaah created all people with; and if you reach the morning, you would attain a great deal of good from Allaah.”

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا أَوَى إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ - يَعْنِي الْيُمْنَى - تَحْتَ خَدِّهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ - أَوْ تَجْمَعُ - عِبَادَكَ.

[3877] ‘Abdullaah [ibn Mas‘ood (may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that when the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) went to his place of sleep, he would put his hand – meaning his right hand – beneath his cheek then say: O Allaah, I implore You to protect me from Your punishment on the Day when You resurrect – or he said: when You gather – Your servants.”

بَابُ مَا يَدْعُو بِهِ إِذَا انْتَبَهَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ

Section about words of supplication to say if one wakes during the night

عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: مَنْ تَعَارَّ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ حِينَ يَسْتَيْقِظُ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ، وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ - ثُمَّ دَعَا: رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي، غُفِرَ لَهُ. قَالَ الْوَلِيدُ: أَوْ قَالَ: دَعَا اسْتُجِيبَ لَهُ، فَإِنْ قَامَ فَتَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى، قُبِلَتْ صَلَاتُهُ.

[3878] ‘Ubaadah ibn as-Saamit [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “If any person wakes during the night then says the following supplication upon waking: ‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah alone, without any partner. To Him alone belongs all dominion, to Him alone belongs all praise, and He is able to do all things. Allaah is perfect in every way, all praise is due to Allaah, none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, Allaah is the Greatest, and there is neither movement nor strength except by Allaah – the All-High, the Most Magnificent –’ and the person then supplicates Allaah by saying: ‘My Lord, I beseech You to forgive me,’ that person would be forgiven.”

The wording mentioned by al-Waleed [one of the subnarrators] was: “or he said: if the person then supplicated, he would be responded to; and if he then stood, performed wudoo’, and then performed prayer, his prayer would be accepted.”

عَنْ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ كَعْبٍ الْأَسْلَمِيَّ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَبِيتُ عِنْدَ بَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، وَكَانَ يَسْمَعُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ - الْهَوِيَّ، ثُمَّ يَقُولُ: سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ.

[3879] Rabee‘ah ibn Ka‘b al-Aslamee [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] narrated that he used to spend the night outside the door of Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection), and he used to hear Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) say at night, “I declare that Allaah, the Lord of all creation, is perfect in every way.” He would repeat that for a while during the night, and then also repeat, “I declare that Allaah is perfect in every way, and I do that with His praise.”

عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا انْتَبَهَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا، وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ.

[3880] Huthayfah [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Whenever Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) woke from sleep at night, he would say, “All praise is due to Allaah, who restored us to life after He caused us to die, and to Him alone will be the resurrection of all people.”

عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ بَاتَ عَلَى طُهُورٍ، ثُمَّ تَعَارَّ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَسَأَلَ اللَّهَ شَيْئًا مِنْ أَمْرِ الدُّنْيَا، أَوْ مِنْ أَمْرِ الْآخِرَةِ، إِلَّا أَعْطَاهُ.

[3881] Mu‘aath ibn Jabal [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “If any person goes to sleep at night in a state of purity, then wakes during the night and asks Allaah for anything of this world or the hereafter, Allaah would inevitably grant it to that person.”

بَابُ الدُّعَاءِ عِنْدَ الْكَرْبِ

Section about supplicating Allaah at times of distress

عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ ابْنَةِ عُمَيْسٍ قَالَتْ: عَلَّمَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَلِمَاتٍ أَقُولُهُنَّ عِنْدَ الْكَرْبِ: اللَّهُ اللَّهُ رَبِّي لَا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا.

[3882] Asmaa’ bint ‘Umays [(may Allaah be pleased with her)] said: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) taught me words of supplication to say at times of distress: Allaah – Allaah alone – is undoubtedly my Lord. I do not ascribe anything at all to Him as a partner.”

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ عِنْدَ الْكَرْبِ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْحَلِيمُ الْكَرِيمُ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ السَّمَوَاتِ السَّبْعِ، وَرَبِّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ. قَالَ وَكِيعٌ مَرَّةً: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ فِيهَا كُلِّهَا.

[3883] [‘Abdullaah] ibn ‘Abbaas [(may Allaah be pleased with both of them)] narrated that the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) used to say at times of distress: “None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, the Most Forbearing, the Most Noble. Completely perfect is Allaah, the Lord of the Magnificent Throne. Completely perfect is Allaah, the Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the Noble Throne.”

When narrating this hadeeth, Wakee‘ [one of the subnarrators] had once said the phrase: “None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah” in each section of the supplication.

بَابُ مَا يَدْعُو بِهِ الرَّجُلُ إِذَا خَرَجَ مِنْ بَيْتِهِ

Section about the supplication a person is to say when departing from his dwelling

عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا خَرَجَ مِنْ مَنْزِلِهِ قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَضِلَّ أَوْ أَزِلَّ، أَوْ أَظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ، أَوْ أَجْهَلَ أَوْ يُجْهَلَ عَلَيَّ.

[3884] Umm Salamah [(may Allaah be pleased with her)] narrated that whenever the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) departed from his dwelling, he would say, “O Allaah, I seek refuge with You lest I go astray or slip, lest I do anyone injustice or have injustice done to me, and lest I behave in an ignorant manner or have others behave in an ignorant manner towards me.”

بَابُ مَا يَدْعُو بِهِ إِذَا دَخَلَ بَيْتَهُ

Section about the supplication a person is to say when he enters his dwelling

عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: إِذَا دَخَلَ الرَّجُلُ بَيْتَهُ فَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ عِنْدَ دُخُولِهِ، وَعِنْدَ طَعَامِهِ، قَالَ الشَّيْطَانُ: لَا مَبِيتَ لَكُمْ وَلَا عَشَاءَ، وَإِذَا دَخَلَ وَلَمْ يَذْكُرِ اللَّهَ عِنْدَ دُخُولِهِ، قَالَ الشَّيْطَانُ: أَدْرَكْتُمُ الْمَبِيتَ، فَإِذَا لَمْ يَذْكُرِ اللَّهَ عِنْدَ طَعَامِهِ، قَالَ: أَدْرَكْتُمُ الْمَبِيتَ وَالْعَشَاءَ.

[3887] Jaabir ibn ‘Abdillaah [(may Allaah be pleased with both of them)] narrated that he heard the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) say, “If a person enters his dwelling and mentions Allaah when he enters and when he eats, shaytaan says to his helpers, ‘Here there is neither any place for you to spend the night nor any evening meal.’ However, if a person enters his dwelling and does not mention Allaah upon entering, shaytaan says to his helpers, ‘Here you have found a place to spend the night’; and if the person does not mention Allaah when he eats, shaytaan says to his helpers, ‘Here you have found a place to spend the night and also found an evening meal.”

بَابُ مَا يَدْعُو بِهِ الرَّجُلُ إِذَا سَافَرَ

Section about the supplication to be said by a person when he sets out on a journey

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَرْجِسَ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ - وَقَالَ: عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ: يَتَعَوَّذُ - إِذَا سَافَرَ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ، وَكَآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ، وَالْحَوْرِ بَعْدَ الْكَوْرِ، وَدَعْوَةِ الْمَظْلُومِ، وَسُوءِ الْمَنْظَرِ فِي الْأَهْلِ وَالْمَالِ. وَزَادَ أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ: فَإِذَا رَجَعَ قَالَ مِثْلَهَا.

[3888] ‘Abdullaah ibn Sarjis [(may Allaah be pleased with him)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) used to supplicate – and [one of the subnarrators,] ‘Abdur-Raheem, said: used to seek refuge – when he travelled by saying the following words, “O Allaah, I earnestly seek refuge with You from the hardships of travel, from any sorrows upon my return, from experiencing any decrease after increase, from anyone dealt with unjustly supplicating against me, and from anything unsightly afflicting my family or property.”

[Another one of the subnarrators,] Aboo Mu‘aawiyah, added, “and on his return journey, he said likewise.”

بَابُ مَا يَدْعُو بِهِ الرَّجُلُ إِذَا رَأَى السَّحَابَ وَالْمَطَرَ

Section about the supplication a person is to say when he sees clouds and rain

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا رَأَى سَحَابًا مُقْبِلًا مِنْ أُفُقٍ مِنَ الْآفَاقِ، تَرَكَ مَا هُوَ فِيهِ - وَإِنْ كَانَ فِي صَلَاتِهِ - حَتَّى يَسْتَقْبِلَهُ فَيَقُولُ: اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أُرْسِلَ بِهِ. فَإِنْ أَمْطَرَ قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ سَيْبًا نَافِعًا - مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا. وَإِنْ كَشَفَهُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَلَمْ يُمْطِرْ، حَمِدَ اللَّهَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ.

[3889] ‘Aa’ishah [(may Allaah be pleased with her)] narrated that when the Prophet (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) saw a cloud approaching from any horizon, he would stop what he was doing – even if he was praying – until he faced it, and then supplicated by saying, “O Allaah, we earnestly seek refuge with You from any evils with which this has been sent.” If it subsequently rained, he would supplicate by saying, “O Allaah, let this be a beneficial downpour.” He would repeat that twice or thrice. Furthermore, if Allaah – the Almighty and Most Majestic – removed the clouds and it did not rain, he would praise Allaah for that.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا رَأَى الْمَطَرَ قَالَ: اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ صَيِّبًا هَنِيئًا.

[3890] ‘Aa’ishah [(may Allaah be pleased with her)] narrated that when Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) saw rain, he would supplicate by saying, “O Allaah, make it a downpour that brings ease.”

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا رَأَى مَخِيلَةً تَلَوَّنَ وَجْهُهُ وَتَغَيَّرَ، وَدَخَلَ وَخَرَجَ، وَأَقْبَلَ وَأَدْبَرَ، فَإِذَا أَمْطَرَتْ سُرِّيَ عَنْهُ. قَالَ: فَذَكَرَتْ لَهُ عَائِشَةُ بَعْضَ مَا رَأَتْ مِنْهُ، فَقَالَ: وَمَا يُدْرِيكِ؟ لَعَلَّهُ كَمَا قَالَ قَوْمُ هُودٍ: ((فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ عَارِضًا مُسْتَقْبِلَ أَوْدِيَتِهِمْ قَالُوا هَذَا عَارِضٌ مُمْطِرُنَا بَلْ هُوَ مَا اسْتَعْجَلْتُمْ بِهِ)) الْآيَةَ.

[3891] ‘Aa’ishah [(may Allaah be pleased with her)] narrated that when Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) saw a cloud that looked as if it was bringing rain, the colour of his face would redden, and his facial expression would change due to apprehension. He would enter and then leave again, and he would face the people and then turn away. If the cloud did end up bringing rain, his previous state would end. ‘Aa’ishah mentioned to him what she had seen him do, and he said, “What could apprise you about what might end up happening? Perhaps it would be like what the people of the Prophet Hud said [in the passage of the Qur’aan that states]: ((Then, when they saw it as a dense cloud coming towards their valleys, they said, ‘This is a cloud bringing us rain!’ On the contrary, it is the torment that you demanded to be hastened)) [46:24]” until the end of the passage.

بَابُ مَا يَدْعُو بِهِ الرَّجُلُ إِذَا نَظَرَ إِلَى أَهْلِ الْبَلَاءِ

Section about the supplication a person is to say if he sees people who have been tested in some way

عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: مَنْ فَجِئَهُ صَاحِبُ بَلَاءٍ، فَقَالَ: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي عَافَانِي مِمَّا ابْتَلَاكَ بِهِ، وَفَضَّلَنِي عَلَى كَثِيرٍ مِمَّنْ خَلَقَ تَفْضِيلًا - عُوفِيَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الْبَلَاءِ، كَائِنًا مَا كَانَ.

[3892] [‘Abdullaah] ibn ‘Umar [(may Allaah be pleased with both of them)] stated: Allaah’s Messenger (may Allaah grant him commendation and protection) said, “If any person unexpectedly encounters an individual who has been tested in some way, and the person supplicates by saying, ‘All praise is due to Allaah who protected me from what He tested you with, and favoured me greatly over many others among those whom He created’ the person who supplicates would be protected from being tested in that way, whatever it might be.”
