Why should I be interested in using music to develop partnerships across difference?
There are many reasons why embedding a musical link into your global partnership might be a great choice for your school:
Maximising limited classroom time
As educators, we all know that Global Learning matters, and that we need to find ways to address the climate crisis with our pupils – but our days are already crammed full of everything we have to do in order to keep our pupils safe and happy, and get through the curriculum. It can feel so hard to find effective ways to include these crucial elements of learning into our school life in a way that is impactful. Whilst a carefully-planned, meaningful musical linking project takes commitment, it doesn't have to take a huge amount of extra curriculum time for busy teachers and pupils.
Low cost
Using music to link with a partner school in your own or another country is an effective way to enrich your school’s Global Learning programme whilst embedding it into your existing curriculum commitments. What’s more, it doesn’t need to cost a lot of money – good news for limited school budgets.
Enhancing SMSC and Values Education
At the same time, reflecting carefully on your choice of songs and using them to explicitly teach important values will support your SMSC curriculum and encourage pupils’ personal growth and development.
Supporting pupils' mental health
Even better, where teachers may feel overwhelmed by the scale of current global challenges and concerned about climate anxiety in their pupils, linking through music in a fun-filled way can break through these barriers. It can bring a sense of hope, connection and partnership with real people in a different part of the world as pupils share what they are doing in their own context – a great way to ‘think global, act local’.
