Out of concern for a particular mother who longed to understand the Quran in Arabic but was not able to study it full-time, Qamar Institute, a part time Arabic and Islamic studies institution, was born. Starting with just this one mother, moving to a class of 55 students, today (nine years later) we’ve had hundreds of students pass through our doors, Alhamdulillah.
Established in 2010 under the name Darun Naim Lil Ummahat, the objective of this course was simple: to equip women/mothers with the necessary knowledge of the Arabic language, so that they may be able to understand the Quran as they read it in Arabic.
As our first few students completed the Quran with us, we found the need to offer further Islamic studies, in order to cater for the needs and requests of these keen and eager students.
We, thus, now also offer classes on Hadeeth, Fiqh and Aqeeda, for those who have completed the Quran with us.
Our course allows women the opportunity to learn about the meanings and beauty of the Quran and Sunnah whilst having the ability to still comfortably fulfill their daily responsibilities at home or at work, insha-Allah.
As women, we go through different phases in our lives, from being a daughter to becoming a wife, mother, grandmother, and so much more. In each of these roles, we are expected to be a means of guidance and tranquility, and a source of beauty, comfort and light even in the darkest and most difficult of times. Inspired by Allah’s description of the mother as the moon (qamar) in verse 4 of Surah Yusuf [Qur’ān: 12], the name Qamar Institute was chosen as the moon too moves from one phase to another, and during each phase it maintains a sense of beauty, calmness and light, despite the darkness of the night. Our aim is to equip our students with the tools needed to become such a means of beauty, calmness and most importantly, light. Even during the darkest of times. And for ourselves to become such as well, as an Institution. Amin
