In academic year 2022-2023, Cal State LA focused on the long-term stability of our signature Online Course Development Program (OCDP), as well as sustaining faculty interest in building high quality online courses. Since the program began, 156 courses have passed a Quality Matters Preparatory Review, the highest number in the system for this type of review. An additional 22 courses are currently in review or being amended to meet QM Standards.
We are excited to report that the Online Course Development Program has positively impacted student success. OCDP quality assured courses on average have lower student DFW rates.
We set the following goals for AY 22-23:
Goal 1: Work with 60 faculty in our in-house Designing Online Courses workshop (OCDP Option 1) in AY 2022-2023
Goal 2: Support 75 faculty to complete IYOC (OCDP Option 2) in AY 2022-2023
Goal 3: Train 25 faculty to become QM-certified peer reviewers. Have them complete APPQRM and PRC, as needed. These faculty will help share the importance of QM reviews among various departments and colleges.
Goal 4: Get 50 courses through QM Preparatory Review. Support courses to pass QM Preparatory Review.
We believe the OCDP program has positively influenced shared governance. In fall semester 2022, the Academic Senate passed the Criteria for Proposing Courses with Hybrid and Online-Only Components policy. New course proposals and course modifications seeking approval to convert to hybrid or online-only must address in their justification ten essential Quality Matters standards. This strong commitment from the Senate helps to formalize some of the campus quality assurances processes currently in place.
The Provost’s Office continues to generously support the Online Course Development Program (OCDP), offering three pathways to prepare courses for the fully online format. Courses are nominated by college deans so that departments and programs can strategically prioritize courses that should be offered fully online. The campus’ Center for Effective Teaching and Learning (CETL) helps oversee this program to support faculty and courses through course redesign, and with QM Preparatory Review.
Academic Affairs units (including CETL) continue to host course modality and curriculum retreats for colleges and departments. These retreats facilitate faculty-driven discussions of course modality considerations, including conversations about the future of online learning at Cal State LA.

CETL and our Office of Institutional Effectiveness have partnered to analyze student success in courses taught by faculty completing the OCDP program. IE will soon release an interactive Tableau dashboard displaying student success data for quality assured courses. IE analyzed 103 course sections, from Fall 2018 to Fall 2022. The results show an improvement in student success:
An initial DFW rate of 12.2% was reduced to 9.4% post-training.
Projecting the future impact of just these 103 sections, approximately 500 more students will pass their classes by 2027-2028.
While continuing to sustain our current progress, we aim to make three significant changes in this next program year:
send courses for full QM Certification
relaunch peer reviewer training as the QM Expert-at-large program
offer faculty the option to design and seek certification for hybrid courses in Spring 2024.
