Hvitsten - Fred. Olsen and Edvard Munch
The old wooden church from 1903 was a gift from Bolette Olsen, Fred Olsens mother. The shipping company is often the first thing many Norwegians associate with Hvitsten. The Olsen family mansion, Lysedal, still dominate the landscape in line with the company's old figureheads that is placed around Hvitsten’s parks. Fred. Olsen Lines have placed 37 different figureheads, designed by known Norwegian artist, used on the company’s vessels on display for the public. In 1910 Edvard Munch bought “Nedre Ramme” as a summer residence and atelier. Here he painted several of his famous pictures, including Alma Mater to the University hall. Munch owned “Nedre Ramme” until his death in 1944. “Nedre Ramme” is under refurbishing and is scheduled to open in 2018 as part of Ramme gård (farm).
