We've prepared our list of carefully-curated, constantly-updated long term opportunities for your community service hours here. Please keep in mind you are not limited to these events. We also regularly post short term event volunteer opportunities on our Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities tab! Last-minute opportunities may also be sent out through Google Classroom announcements. 

In order to be inducted into NHS, or to remain in good standing in NHS, each student must earn at least 15 hours per semester.

We are changing the system this year so that it will be easier for us and you to submit hours as you get them. We will now be using an online form that will be updated automatically. This will allow you to submit hours (still with proof!) as you accumulate them so your hours can be processed faster at the end of the semester. Check the Status tab for more details on how to submit hours.

If your organization is not already on the approved list, then you must get it approved here.

We will email you a response as soon as possible, so please fill out the form well in advance of volunteering.

This is not an all-inclusive list.  You MUST have your event approved by filling out the form

• Events spreading a religious or political message

• Activities that are required for another class/organization (it must be voluntary!)

• Chores or extra work at the home of an individual (i.e. babysitting your neighbor’s child or mowing your parents’ lawn)

• Times when you are not actively serving (travel time or time spent overnight does not count)

Yes, both current Members and applying members may log up to 10 summer hours starting from May 5th, 2024.

No. You must consistently contribute to your community throughout the entire school year. All NHS Members and potential Inductees must contribute at least 15 hours of community service each semester.

As stated in our bylaws, only NHS-sponsored donations can count for hours. Donation drives organised by NHS (such as donations of teacher supplies) or promoted by NHS (such as Plano West's yearly Holiday Dreams drive) can count for up to 3 hours maximum.

Prior to determining a student’s induction status, the NHS officers may need to verify the authenticity of the hours and the upholding of the “character” pillar.

• 10 hours max from the summer for fall of 2024 (this includes both virtual and in-person).

• Must provide service to at least 2 different organizations.

• 8 hours max of volunteering in one day (you will be limited by the hour submission form).

• Any hours above carry-over limits (hours from the summer, for example) may be used solely for penalty hours.

Breaking these rules will cause the hours in question to not be counted.

Please do not scratch out anything on your hours sheet. If you do so, you may be penalized as we have no way of knowing if you changed the number of hours or other important information after you received a signature for your service.

If you lose your hour sheet, you can print one off here. Do not turn in a notebook paper with your hours on it; we will not accept it! That is what the hours sheets are for. 

Getting hours for two separate clubs (for example, Key Club and NHS) at a single event is STRICTLY PROHIBITED!

We DO check and you will not receive credit for your service.

If a club does not have hours requirements, those events may count for NHS hours UNLESS YOU ARE AN OFFICER IN THAT CLUB.
