We know from the Purina study 14-Year Life Span Study in Dogs | Purina Institute, that a body condition score of 5/9 compared to 7/9 results in an extended lifespan of almost 2 years and less arthritis!
The first step in prolonging your dog’s mobility and life is to evaluate whether they meet that ideal body condition score of 4-5/9.
If they don’t then it is time to take action!
First measure your love by measuring the amount of food that you give them (and even if they are in the ideal range, you should measure their food to make sure they maintain that weight).
One cup of food should be one level measuring cup – not a heaping supersized coffee cup!
If your dog is not at a body condition score of 4-5, then first do an inventory of what they are eating. Do they get snacks? Did you know that many dog treats are packed with calories?
You can replace dog treats with carrots or green beans or apple pieces (Do not feed your dog grapes or raisins – they can be toxic! (Fruits and Vegetables Dogs Can or Can't Eat – American Kennel Club (akc.org))
Start by reducing the amount of food by 10% and recheck their body condition score weekly. If in 4 weeks you are not seeing a change, decrease the amount of food by 10% again.
If your dog doesn't feel full, try adding some fiber source like a few tablespoons of canned pumpkin (not the pie mix) or some green beans or cooked carrots to the food.
If your dog is still not losing weight, you should consult with your veterinarian to make sure that there isn’t a medical condition and to consider a prescription weight loss diet. In addition to controlling their diet, exercise is an essential part of healthy living.
