Mini-Lessons

Lesson Flow

Each lesson will have this type of structure for the most part. You will introduce the challenge as the launch for the goal of the learning. There might be a few lessons that have a bit more setup than others, but mostly the build and play is to get them excited and engaged right away.

Once the challenge is explained, then they build. Right before they build it might be good to go over the expectations(see below). Feel free to modify and tweak to fit your school model.

After they build, then we share. Sharing is crucial to the learning and discussion. Sharing will be with a partner, small group, or whole group depending on the task.

Basic Rules

Feel free to modify, but in general we follow these principles to allow for creative play and to build confidence in our ideas and expression.

1. We don't judge the build of others. We always allow the builder to explain their model and why it completes the task. If they tell you it is a duck, then it is a duck.

2. Everyone needs to be involved. This keeps the space safe as we all must be vulnerable in our building.

3. We never express that an answer is wrong. After they explain their build we can ask questions, but we leave judgement at the door. If we want students to truly be creative, then we must eliminate fear of being wrong.

4 & 5. When someone is explaining we focus on the build and not the person. It makes a huge difference when we are asking students to be vulnerable and share their ideas.

6. It is all about support and celebration of our ideas.
