Nonresident Alien Tax Preparation

Below, you will find steps to prepare and file your 2023 Federal and State tax returns. Please be sure to prepare and file these returns NO LATER THAN APRIL 15, 2024

Please note that you must likely prepare and file BOTH a federal and state tax return (2 returns). To the extent you worked in another State other than Indiana you may have to file another state tax return for that state. Follow the steps below to access resources for help with each.

You will prepare your Federal return in Glacier; you will prepare your Indiana state return with general guidance from Purdue DSB's state tax module.

Some notes on filing your tax return:

Please Watch these Student Videos!

We applaud helpful students that have taken then time to create their own walkthrough videos of filing tax returns from their perspective as an international student. We found these videos extremely helpful, thanks Piyush!

In prior years you may have used a legacy system hosted by Krannert/DSB which resided behind the Purdue login and contained a walk-through video and post-submission survey. This legacy system is mentioned in the above student video; however, this legacy system has been disabled for 2023 tax returns and will not be available. Upon review we found the legacy resource to be duplicative to the resources provided here.

As such, we have disabled these resources for the 2023 filing season.

BRAND NEW! Indiana Department of Revenue Videos

We are excited to present these comprehensive videos from the Indiana Department of Revenue. If you cannot download the forms directly from their site we have procured the forms for you here.

Please note, some of the information about Schedule IN-W (around the 18-minute mark in the Part 2 video) is incorrect. The only changes were clarifying which of the multiple 1099 forms we go over in this workshop, and correcting the last 3 columns for anyone who needs to report a 1042-S. Please see the Schedule IN-W information.pdf in our State Tax Forms page for updated slides and speaker notes for walking through this section to the extent it is applicable to you.

STEPS TO PREPARE YOUR FEDERAL AND STATE TAX RETURNS

(Note that all resources may not be available until February 15, 2024)

Please note that you MUST prepare BOTH a federal and state tax return. They will be mailed to different addresses.

1.      Prepare your federal tax return (Form 1040NR AND Form 8843) in the Purdue Glacier Tax Prep System.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE ALL TAX FORMS READY BEFORE USING THIS SYSTEM (including forms like Form 1042-S, Forms 1099, and Forms W-2 – you may not have all of these forms). You must include income from ALL of these forms in your filing. Please direct all Purdue-related federal tax questions to tax@purdue.edu

As a nonresident alien, even if you had no income for the tax year, Form 8843 will still need to be filed to document your exempt (F, J, M, or Q) visa status and days in the U.S. for the tax year. Dependents of exempt visas, F-2, J-2, M-2, or Q-3 must also file the Form 8843. The form is available in the Glacier Tax Preparation module, or you can get the form and instructions by clicking here. The Form 8843 is mailed to the address on the form (and in the instructions):

If you are filing a 2023 Form 1040-NR, attach Form 8843 to it. Mail your tax return by the due date (including extensions) to the address shown in your tax return instructions.

If you don’t have to file a 2023 tax return, mail Form 8843 to the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center, Austin, TX 73301-0215 by the due date (including extensions) for filing Form 1040-NR.

AFTER COMPLETING YOUR FEDERAL TAX RETURN, PLEASE USE THE DANIELS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS GUIDANCE SYSTEM EXPLAINED IN STEP 2 TO COMPLETE YOUR STATE TAX RETURN.

 2.      Prepare your state tax return(s) (Form IT-40PNR in Indiana).

Download and complete the appropriate State Tax Forms; the sample links presented on this page have been updated to current year forms. You may also consider watching these Student Videos for guidance as well. NOTE: While the videos and references have not been updated to 2023, we generally did not observe any material differences.

The Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. School of Business provides assistance through the IRS VITA program. This program employs a self-service module to either help you prepare your state tax return by hand or arrange a time to have a certified volunteer prepare your state tax return. This module will first give you a survey to determine the best path for you. Next, it will either guide you through a self-service video to prepare your tax return, or it will allow you to virtually drop off tax return information to prepare your state tax return(s), depending on your tax situation. If you did not earn any income in 2023, you usually will not need to complete a state tax return.

LASTLY, YOU WILL NEED TO PRINT, SIGN, AND MAIL YOUR TAX RETURNS AS EXPLAINED IN STEP 3.

3.      Sign your federal and state tax returns and mail them to the correct locations.

You can find the mailing location for your federal tax return on your documents produced in Glacier. You will find the mailing location for your state tax return in the form instructions or by clicking here. Please remember that you must sign and mail your tax returns NO LATER THAN April 15, 2024. Also, please note that these tax returns are mailed separately to different addresses. If you used the video-based module, please be sure you have completed the post-assistance survey prior to mailing your state tax return. If we notice any errors in your calculations, you will receive an email to stop by a live assistance session to have your numbers checked. Please wait at least 3-5 business days before mailing your state tax return after completing the post-assistance survey.

Option 2: Assisted Preparation

New for 2024, the United Way of Greater Lafayette is offering tax preparation services to Nonresident Alien International students through a drop-off service. Please note, this service may be limited at any time due to capacity constraints in which case you will use the above steps to self-prepare.

Please see their website for scheduling details: https://uwlafayette.org/1040nrtaxhelp/
