The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), known as Sintang Paaralan, was established on October 19, 1904, as the Manila Business School (MBS), under the American colonial government. Its initial mission was to provide practical business education for Filipinos.
Over the years, PUP has undergone several transformations:
In 1911, it was renamed the Philippine School of Commerce (PSC), expanding its programs to include secondary and collegiate levels.
In 1952, the school was elevated to the status of Philippine College of Commerce (PCC), marking its shift toward higher education with a focus on commerce and business administration.
Finally, in 1978, it became the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), reflecting its evolution into a comprehensive institution offering a wide range of programs beyond business and commerce.
Today, PUP is recognized as the largest state university in the Philippines in terms of student population, with multiple campuses across the country. The university upholds its motto, “Light of the Nation” (Tanglaw ng Bayan), by providing affordable yet quality education accessible to Filipinos from all walks of life.
