Our Department's History
The Bachelor of Science in Biology Program of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines was first offered in the A. Mabini (Main) campus at Santa Mesa, Manila. It was established under the Department of Natural Science (DNS) in 2007 that was then chaired by Dr. Zenaida R. Sarmiento, who later became the Dean of the College, and recently retired as the Vice President for Student Affairs and Services. The original curriculum was crafted by the core faculty of the Department that was led by Assoc. Prof. Ruthela P. Payawal at that time.
The program initially attracted students planning for BS Biology as a pre-medical course requirement, but the curriculum has shown great caliber on producing talented undergraduates with a wide research background in microbiology, animal, and plant biology. The program was then decided to be separated from the defunct DNS giving birth to the Department of Biology in 2010. The Department was then first headed by Dr. Lourdes V. Alvarez and held this position until 2013.
The young Department started with only two sections and the first graduates was in 2011. The active participation of the faculty and undergraduate students to research and the numerous scholarships and awards received had garnered attention from the PUP community and at the national level. By 2013, chairperson Dr. Alvarez was concurrently the Director of PUP Institute for Science and Technology Research that created the different centers of research which generally implemented a research policy mostly from the biological discipline. From 2014 – 2016, the Department was chaired by Dr. Armin S. Coronado. During the years 2010 – 2016, laboratories in Phycology and Microbiology, and the PUP Herbarium were established that accommodated teaching demonstration and research works of the Department’s faculty and students.
On the early part of 2017, Dr. Alvarez came back from a postdoctoral training and returned as the Department chair. However, she opted to become a full-time faculty researcher and built the Mycology and Nematology laboratories in 2018. She passed the torch in 2018 to the capable hands of the Department’s current Chairperson, Assoc. Prof. Carmelita P. Mapanao.
To meet the development and the broadening of Biology as an academic discipline, the curriculum of the BS Biology program was revised in 2018 and now offered three (3) specialization tracks: Microbiology, Plant Biology and Animal Biology. Since then, the program now caters five sections of BS Biology students per Year Level.
Faculty roster has also increased, facilities improved, and extensions were implemented that enabled the Department to achieve a Level II re-accreditation from the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP), Inc. in 2021.
For seventeen years, the Department of Biology of Polytechnic University of the Philippines of A. Mabini Campus has been a home to a growing number of highly motivated researchers, health practitioners & educators of biological science with profound awareness & respect to principles governing the science of life. Guaranteed to be equipped with technical proficiency and research and extension capabilities, the faculty and students of the Department are proactive and engaging members of the society in creating sustainable communities and are committed to excellence and service to the nation.
