A pump track is one of the few outdoor spaces designed for everyone. It’s perfect for:
young children on balance bikes
teenagers on scooters and skateboards
BMX riders
adults wanting low‑impact exercise
older residents staying active
It’s a place where the whole community can ride, play and build confidence together.
Pump tracks are incredibly efficient community facilities. They need:
very little maintenance
no staff
no electricity
no specialist equipment
That makes them one of the most cost‑effective recreation spaces a council can build.
Pump tracks encourage:
physical activity
balance and coordination
outdoor play
mental wellbeing
Because they’re used by all ages, they deliver big public‑health benefits for a very small ongoing cost.
Canterbury is poorly served compared to many parts of the UK, where pump tracks have become a standard feature in parks and community spaces. Across the country, towns and cities of all sizes now have modern, all‑weather pump tracks that support families, young people and adults.
In Canterbury district, however, there is no modern, surfaced pump track suitable for scooters, skateboards, balance bikes and BMX riders of all abilities. This leaves a clear gap in safe, inclusive outdoor facilities for children, teenagers and adults alike.
A new pump track would bring Canterbury in line with what many other UK communities already enjoy — a high‑quality, all‑ages space that supports health, activity and community life.

We, the undersigned, call on Canterbury City Council to create a new, modern pump track within the district to provide a safe, inclusive and accessible space for people of all ages and abilities to ride, play and stay active.
Pump tracks are designed for everyone — from young children on balance bikes, to teenagers on scooters and skateboards, to BMX riders, adults seeking low‑impact exercise, and older residents maintaining mobility. They are one of the most inclusive forms of outdoor recreation available.
A pump track would deliver significant community benefits, including:
Health and wellbeing: supports physical activity, balance, coordination, outdoor play and mental health for all ages.
Low ongoing cost: requires minimal maintenance, no staffing, no electricity and no specialist equipment.
Safe youth provision: offers a positive, supervised‑by‑design space for young people.
Community cohesion: brings families, riders and residents together in a shared public space.
Canterbury currently has very limited provision compared to many other UK communities, leaving a clear gap in facilities for children, young people and adults.
identify a suitable site, allocate funding, and commission the construction of a new pump track for Canterbury.

There are UK contractors that specialise in the design and construction of modern pump track facilities. You can see examples of their work here:

The pump track at Sturry is a neglected and overgrown dirt track, suitable for BMX and mountain bikes only. It is not viable for small wheels like skateboard, scooters and roller blades. Dirt tracks are also not generally great for young children or beginners to learn on.
We need to reach people across the local community; young people, parents, local residents, schools and clubs. If you would be willing to help take this campaign to your community please get in touch using the contact form. We'd particularly like to hear from young people who would be willing to promote in their schools, for example with a school assembly.
Canterbury is poorly served by high quality public activity facilities generally - not just pump tracks. We should be campaigning for facilities of all sorts. A pump track going ahead does not preclude other projects being developed or campaigned for.
