The Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) officially opened the University Games 2025 on October 20, 2025, at the SLSU-Main Campus grounds, marking the start of a dynamic week filled with sportsmanship, unity, and school pride. The much-anticipated event gathered athletes, coaches, and officials from all six campuses Sogod (Main), Maasin City, Tomas Oppus, Bontoc, San Juan, and Hinunangan for a celebration of athletic excellence and camaraderie.
The opening ceremony was a spectacle of color and energy, as delegates proudly marched during the parade of athletes, carrying their banners high and radiating campus pride. The vibrant atmosphere was amplified by cheers and applause from the crowd, reflecting the excitement surrounding the week-long competition.
In her heartfelt welcome message, Dr. Marie Khul C. Langub emphasized the essence of sports in fostering unity and relationships within the SLSU community. She remarked, “In every competition lies a connection,” reminding everyone that the true spirit of the games lies not only in victory but also in the friendships and teamwork that flourish through competition. Meanwhile, Dr. Eda Opina, Director of Sports and Cultural Affairs, delivered an inspiring message urging participants to play with humility and integrity. She highlighted that beyond skill, the true measure of a champion is found in discipline, fairness, and respect values that shape the character of every athlete.
The ceremony also featured solemn moments that reflected commitment and integrity in sports. Ronah Eda Kate Garde, bronze medalist in Lawn Tennis Women’s Singles at the National SCUAA 2025, led the Oath of Amateurism, symbolizing honesty and fairness in competition. Lael Christian L. Joven, also a National SCUAA 2025 delegate, led the Athletes’ Prayer, invoking divine guidance for a safe and honorable event. The Oath of Officiating Officials, administered by Archelis V. Serano, Head of Sports Development, reaffirmed the officials’ vow to uphold impartiality and justice throughout the games.
The highlight of the ceremony came when University President Dr. Jude A. Duarte officially declared the University Games 2025 open. In his address, he reminded athletes that “the real victory lies not in winning medals, but in giving your best and honoring your opponents.” With his declaration and the resounding whistle, the University Games 2025 were officially underway.
The celebration also highlights the performance as each campus delivered a stunning mass dance presentation, showcasing creativity, unity, and the boundless enthusiasm of the SLSU community.
As the competitions unfold, the University Games 2025 stand as a testament to SLSU’s enduring commitment to excellence not just in academics, but also in the holistic growth of its students.
