On December 4, 2024, Southern Leyte State University-Maasin City Campus (SLSU-MCC), recently held a significant event titled "Breaking the Silence: Brief Discussions on Violence Against Women." The forum started with a welcome message by the Campus Director Mr. Frederick C. Aniga, Ph.D., who emphasized the aim to raise awareness about the pervasive issue of violence against women and empower individuals to act.
The event kicked off with a series of insightful discussions led by experts in the field. Mr. Daryl Valdez, RSW, MSSW; shed light on the various forms of violence against women, highlighting the urgent need to address this pressing societal problem. Following Mr. Valdez's presentation, Ms. Renalain Bagtasus, RSW, MSSW; delved into the provisions of Republic Act No. 11313, also known as the "Safe Spaces Act." This law aims to prevent, deter, and respond to sexual harassment in public spaces. A particularly moving moment of the forum was the sharing of a personal experience by a survivor of violence against women. Her courage in speaking out inspired the audience and underscored the importance of breaking the silence surrounding this issue.
The event concluded with a ceremonial signing of support to end violence against women. This symbolic gesture demonstrated the university's commitment to addressing this pressing issue and promoting gender equality.
By organizing this informative and impactful forum, SLSU has taken a significant step toward fostering a safer and more equitable campus environment. The university's dedication to addressing social issues and empowering its students is commendable and sets a positive example for other institutions.
