“True leaders don’t create followers; they create more leaders.”
This inspiring quote, shared by Mr. Joseph Nantes, who was the guest speaker, resonated with attendees at a recent seminar held at Southern Leyte State University-Maasin City Campus on December 4, 2024. Led by Mr. James Michael P. Amrinto, SSC Adviser, and hosted by Francis Ianne Jacobe, the event aimed to empower student leaders with valuable insights and practical skills to become effective leaders.
Attended by student leaders and officers from the Supreme Student Council (SSC), Junior Social Work Association of the Philippines (JSWAP), Circle of Public Administration Students (CPAS), (EDEO), Pulse Publication, and Peer Facilitator Organizations; the event started with a very intriguing question, "What is Leadership?".
With this main question on hand, Mr. Nantes shared the key functions and processes of leadership and the significant traits of being the best leaders. He also emphasized the crucial role of leaders in facilitating change, boosting employee morale, providing guidance, setting goals, promoting teamwork, and the importance of leaders in fostering unity, harmony, strength, prosperity, and happiness within organizations.
Nantes also added, "Failure is not the opposite of success, and as leaders, only make new mistakes as you move through."
The event ended with an engaging activity, where student leaders were asked to write down their qualities, strengths, and weaknesses to be shared within the group. This task aimed to target the awareness among individuals, that as leaders there are traits that need to be improved and to be known, for better management of other students within the campus, and their handled organizations.
The SLSU-MCC's student leaders and officers expressed gratitude to Mr. Joseph Nantes for sharing his valuable insights into the event. The seminar is expected to have a positive impact on the leadership skills and overall development of the MCC officers, which will be beneficial to the students and the campus' progress over time.
