Maasin City, Southern Leyte — September 24, 2025
The Southern Leyte State University Maasin City Campus organized a Prayer and Peaceful Rally Against Corruption at the SLSU-MCC Grounds in Maasin City, bringing together students, faculty, community members, and students organizations in a united stand for integrity, justice, and peace.
The gathering opened with the assembly of participants at 2:30 PM. The program formally began with a Rosary prayer and an opening prayer led by the ARMY Organization, followed by a patriotic song rendered by Sister Ederlina Costillas. The solemn raising of the national flag, accompanied by the singing of the National Anthem, was led by Nonito Deligero Jr., Christian Baro, and Jomar Gesto, symbolizing national pride and unity.
In his welcome remarks and statement of unity, Dr. Frederick C. Aniga emphasized the significance of collective action in fighting corruption and building a society rooted in truth and fairness. This was followed by a Message of Solidarity from Magdaleno T. Samaco, Madonna Jacobe, and Sophia Calatrava, who shared words of encouragement, accountability, and hope for a better nation.
The second part of the rally featured a cultural and artistic intermission presented by selected students, using the arts to reflect on the nation’s struggles and aspirations. A highlight of the program was the collective prayer and candle-lighting ceremony led by Colina E. Mercado, symbolizing the people’s unified commitment to dispel the darkness of corruption with the light of faith and justice.
The participants then declared their commitment to integrity and honesty, guided by Karina G. Guitierrez and Dr. Jonathan Palco. The event concluded with the singing of unity songs and the signing of a symbolic tarp/board, affirming the collective pledge of the people to stand against corruption.
The Prayer and Peaceful Rally Against Corruption was more than a gathering; it was a testament to the community’s resolve to uphold peace, justice, and good governance. By coming together in prayer and action, the people of Southern Leyte State University Maasin City Campus demonstrated that true change begins with unity, faith, and the courage to demand accountability.
