On May 17, 2024, Southern Leyte State University – Maasin City Campus (SLSU-MCC) held a colorful Barrio Fiesta to mark the conclusion of the academic year. The colorful event was a tribute to the people and culture of the Philippines, modeled after traditional neighborhood fiestas. Every year, the university's cooperative and friendly culture is celebrated with a joyous gathering of staff, faculty, and students.
The teachers, staff, and kids were happy to enjoy and relish the joyous occasion because of the colorful festive decorations and theme. Along with enjoyable traditional barrio games like Chinese garter, human dama, and palo sebo, the event made everyone happy and smiled as they remembered the traditional fiesta celebration. The main attractions of the Barrio Fiesta were the outstanding performances by first-year students and the Supreme Student Council (SSC). The SSC and first-year students performed a variety of traditional Filipino dances, including the graceful Polka sa Nayon, Paru-parong Bukid, Si Felimon, Pasayawa ko Day, and many more that brought the ever-popular dances to life.
Their tremendous success following their performances was a result of their diligence and commitment to becoming experts in these cultural displays. First-year students added to the enthusiasm by putting on a colorful performance of folk dances, demonstrating their readiness to accept and take part in university traditions. In addition to the performances, the event served as a platform for the announcement of the newly elected SSC officers for the 2024–2025 academic year.
Barrio Fiesta demonstrated SLSU-MCC's commitment to preserving Filipino cultural tradition and fostering a strong sense of community, going beyond just being an annual event. Staff, teachers, and students from different generations were effectively brought together for a joyous celebration of accomplishments and customs on this special occasion. As the festivities drew to a close, the sense of accomplishment and progress was a self-satisfying moment as another academic year came to a lovely conclusion.
