On the morning of January 21, 2025, from 8:00 to 11:00 AM, a seminar titled Pre-employment for Graduating Students was conducted as part of a full-day seminar on Labor Education at Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) Maasin City Campus AVR Room. The seminar was aimed at guiding graduating students through the often-challenging transition from academic life to the professional world. The resource speaker, Mr. Norman Victor M. Ordiz, shared insightful tips, advice, and the essential documentary requirements as well as skills needed during a job interview in landing a job.
The session began with a prayer followed by tge singing of the Philippine national anthem as well as the SLSU hymn. Mr. Jim Jerson Genol delivered the welcome message and Ms. Junisa Ida Salar introduced the speaker. Mr. Ordiz, the resource space, started the seminar properly through an emphasis on how transitioning from the educational environment to the workplace can be both "tedious and treacherous." He acknowledged that the shift is not always easy but assured students that proper preparation and mindset can ease the journey. He stressed that personal growth often stems from both successes and failures. A key takeaway from his talk was the importance of reflecting on past experiences—both good and bad. This reflection allows individuals to learn and improve, setting a foundation for success in the professional world.
Mr. Ordiz then moved on to discuss the critical documentary requirements that every job applicant should prepare:
• Resume: A concise document summarizing an applicant's qualifications and personal information.
• Transcript of Records: A formal academic record that provides proof of educational background.
• NBI Clearance: A necessary document for confirming one's criminal record status.
• ID Photos: Recent passport-sized photos required for job applications.
• Barangay Clearance: A local government-issued certificate, verifying the applicant’s residency.
• Medical Check-up: Health assessment results ensuring the applicant’s fitness for employment.
In addition to these documents, the seminar highlighted the importance of crafting a professional cover or application letter. Mr. Ordiz shared helpful tips for writing this letter:
• Ensure that the address on the cover letter matches the one on your resume.
• Include the full and correct name of the employer or institution.
• Keep the content brief, but relevant, emphasizing your qualifications for the specific job.
• Pay attention to spelling, grammar, and overall presentation to ensure a polished application.
Throughout the seminar, Mr. Ordiz encouraged the students to adopt a proactive attitude towards job hunting. He reminded them that the transition to professional life is a learning process, and being prepared with the right documents and approach will significantly increase their chances of success. The students left the session with a better understanding of the job application process and the practical steps they need to take as they prepare for life after graduation.
This session was a valuable part of the overall seminar, providing practical insights and equipping students with the tools necessary for a smooth entry into the professional world.
