Southern Leyte State University Maasin City Campus (SLSU-MCC) conducted a whole-day Academic Orientation on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, held at the PE Hall and AVR. The event catered to freshmen and continuing students from the Social Work and Public Administration Departments, aiming to provide guidance, updates, and academic expectations for the upcoming school year.
The morning session, held at 9:00 a.m. in the PE Hall, featured the 1st Social Work General Assembly attended by first-year students together with their parents. Facilitated by the Junior Social Work Association of the Philippines (JSWAP) officers, the program included the introduction of the new set of officers, department updates, and orientation on the retention policy. Social Work Department Head, Ms. Elmee, personally requested the gathering to emphasize academic requirements, explain the retention policy, and give tips for student success. She encouraged freshmen to remain committed to their studies and highlighted the vital role of parental support.
In the afternoon, two separate sessions were conducted. At the PE Hall, first to third-year Social Work students attended a department-wide orientation. Discussions centered on the Constitution and By-Laws (CBL), financial statement and budget updates, community service initiatives, and the presentation of the calendar of activities. Part of the session also included the election of the 1st-year representative, allowing new students to actively participate in student leadership.
Meanwhile, at the AVR, the Public Administration Department held its Freshmen Academic Orientation. The session featured the introduction of faculty members and CPAS officers, academic adviser orientation, and reminders on academic rules and expectations. Academic advisers discussed their role in guiding students toward success, including consultation scheduling and academic support. The CPAS also presented its Constitution and By-Laws (CBL), along with the formal introduction of both outgoing and incoming officers. This initiative aimed to help freshmen recognize their student leaders and encourage them to seek assistance on matters concerning the organization, now that they are officially part of it. The program also included a briefing on guidance services available to students.
The orientation day concluded with a shared reminder of the university’s commitment to student development, transparency, and academic excellence. By equipping both freshmen and continuing students with essential information, the event strengthened the collaborative relationship between faculty, student leaders, and the student body.
