Open Access Initiatives

Open access (OA) is a global initiative aimed at providing free and unrestricted access to academic research, including journal articles and data. This model removes financial, legal, and technical barriers, allowing anyone to read, download, and reuse research outputs without cost. Open access is based on the principle that publicly funded research should be freely accessible to enhance its visibility and impact. It is categorized into gold open access, where articles are published in fully open access journals often funded by article processing charges (APCs), and green open access, which allows authors to self-archive their work in institutional repositories. This approach not only fosters collaboration among researchers but also supports the broader goals of open science by making all elements of the research process transparent and reusable.
