On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, the People’s University for Palestine officially launched in San Antonio, Texas, bringing together students, faculty, and community members from across Central and South Texas in a collective commitment to justice for Palestine.
The event, organized by the Campus Coalition Against Educide—a network of student organizations from six area colleges—served as a bold response to Governor Abbott’s Executive Order 44. This order, which weaponizes accusations of antisemitism to silence pro-Palestinian activism, has directly targeted advocates for Palestinian liberation. In defiance of these oppressive measures, the People’s University was established as a powerful platform for resistance, education, and solidarity.
PUFP's launch included a panel discussion, video presentations, and an interactive workshop to design and sustain the university’s work . Special guests included renowned Palestinian poet Naomi Shihab Nye, former Young People’s Poet Laureate, and Indigenous community organizer Karla Aguilar, who brought invaluable perspectives on liberation and resistance. Student leaders, faculty from regional institutions, and local activists also contributed, creating a collaborative and inspiring space for dialogue and action.
