Spintronics

Topological spintronics based on edge state

The edge state of topological insulators can cause current-induced spin polarization. Moreover, when a topological insulator is made in conjunction with a ferromagnetic metal, the edge state can percolate into the metal and cause a current-induced spin torque on the magnetization.

Interplay of spin-orbit coupling and magnetization

Rashba SOC alone causes an edge spin current, and an edge charge current occurs if a magnetization is also present. In addition, the SOC can cause a magnetoelectric torque induced by gate voltage without any bias voltage, valid for 2D metals and graphene.
