Support page for the PubMed Citation Bar extension.
A fair number of issues and updates. iCite is working well now and I added a Reset button if there are issues with any updates. The Tab list is a great way to share current tabs, and the Dev button is only for testers so they can see the extension data sets. Clicking, looking and even clearing wont break the extension.
I did not have much time to test this extension, however, I feel it should work well, refresh the page if your having issues. Please note that not all pages, such as Clinical Queries, are compatible due to differing formats (e.g., less data, no DOI). I'm unsure why some pages and their code (element names, etc.) differ. I opted not to implement more complex code to cover rarely used page formats. Aside from trending pages, I am primarily focused on the following URL formats:
There have been several issues with the PubMed API lately, so I hope to complete the Journal Ranking for 2024 in Apr 2025 without problems. This process typically requires two full weekends.
When on, the Citation Bar toggle button attempts to check the tab status or determine if it's a PubMed page, otherwise it does nothing. This ensures the extension remains active without consuming bandwidth. Even with the bar on, there should be no noticeable performance impact. No data or user actions are tracked, sent, or summarized regardless of the bar's status. The slight delay in displaying the bar is mostly due to an extra second of waiting after the PubMed page loads to ensure everything is OK.
Citation counts from PubMed (which are not directly available, but there is an older, slightly funky method; for example ( https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?linkname=pubmed_pubmed_citedin&from_uid=17316276 ) tend to be lower than those from iCite. iCite, an NIH initiative, pulls data directly from PubMed and provides a more accurate count. It’s a valuable resource that is often underutilized. In contrast, Google Scholar has a broader reach, resulting in higher, potentially inflated citation counts.
