What does this database contain?
This database contains manuscripts that are solely focused on educating the readers about standards for conducting chemical education research and discipline-based education research projects. While some manuscripts may include data, their focus is on describing a particular method (e.g., introduction to social network analysis, statistics used to establish reliability of data) or aspect of the research process (e.g., role of theoretical framework in conducting education research, strategies to demonstrate the trustworthiness of the data, or best practices for conducting quasi-experimental design).
What are the organizational features of the database?
For each manuscript listed in the database, the following information is provided:
Focus: This column can be thought of as a keyword column. We left the keywords relatively broad as it quickly becomes unmanageable otherwise (for example, listing as keywords all the different statistical tests would be unruly). Since the abstracts are provided and the database is fully searchable (see below), one interested in a particular topic can use the search function to identify that specific topic which may be presented in the title or the abstract. More than one keyword can be applied to each manuscript (please disregard the error message associated with cells that contain more than one keyword).
Comprehensive: This keyword refers to a manuscript (typically a book) that covers a variety of topics that could not fit under one of the other keywords.
Theoretical framework: This keyword is associated with manuscripts that explain the role of theoretical frameworks in the research process or describe particular theoretical framework.
Research design: This keyword refers to the overall strategy used to collect, measure, and analyze data that are required to answer specific research questions (e.g. quasi-experimental design, descriptive, correlational, case study).
Data trustworthiness: This keyword applies to manuscripts that describe strategies to establish the trustworthiness of the data collected (also referred to as validity and reliability). These strategies can be applicable to various types of experimental design (e.g., qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods).
Statistical approaches: This keyword applies to manuscripts that describe one or more statistical methods in details.
Instrument development and use: This keyword points to manuscripts that describe methods and best practices for developing new instruments as well as using published instruments such as surveys, concept inventories, or other cognitive and affective assessment tools.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion: This keyword applies to manuscript that describe best practices for conducting research around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Type of publication: All manuscripts contained in this database have been peer-reviewed. Options include Article (refers to manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals), Book, Book Chapter, Report (such as a report from national organizations), and Dissertation.
Year: The year of publication for the manuscript.
Publisher: Name of the journal or publishing company.
Citation: The citation for the manuscript provided in APA style.
Abstract: The full abstract of the article/chapter or an official description of the book.
Link: The active URL link to the manuscript.
How to search the database?
The database is fully searchable. Some of the columns have a filter built in, which is indicated by the presence of three small lines at the top of the column. You can use the filter to either organize the column in a particular way or to select a specific criterion (e.g., theoretical framework). You can also search the entire database by holding CTRL and F keys on your keyboard. This will open a small textbox at the top right corner, in which you can enter any term/word/author you are interested in.
How to update the database?
If you know of an article that fits the description above, please submit it for inclusion in this database by filling out the following form. Keep in mind that the form will ask for specific information that is required to fill out the database. The section above (Description of the elements contained in the database) may help in providing this information.
This database is a work in progress and as such we welcome suggestions. Please use this form to provide your suggestions.
