The community is invited to “pass GO” and join the fun at CRMC’s “Kaleidoscope Game Night” from 5:00-7:00 on Thurs. Oct. 30th at the Ironton American Legion. The retro board game-themed event will feature the nostalgia of Monopoly, Clue, Sorry! – without the rules, just the fun – while raising funds to support local cancer patients. Proceeds from the event will benefit Cuyuna Regional Medical Center’s Courage Cabinet, which provides vital financial assistance to area residents who are battling cancer. Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity invites you to join them on Thurs. Oct. 30th at 5:30 at the ReStore in Brainerd to Raise a Glass, Raise a Wall – an evening of fun, food and community impact. Happy Dancing Turtle is offering Family Nature Play Days, an opportunity for young children and their families to explore the natural world around them at the Hunt Utilities Group Resilient Living Campus in Pine River. Nature Play Days foster curiosity, connection, and a love of nature in a safe, welcoming environment. While spaces are designed for ages 2-7, older siblings may join in alongside their families. The programs are free where kids will enjoy unstructured play. HDT staff will be there to keep things safe, but kids lead the way! The final play date will be held from 10:00-11:30 on Fri. Oct. 31st. Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors will be performed at the Chalberg Theater on the CLC Brainerd Campus at 7:00 Thurs. Oct. 30th & Sat. Nov. 1st, with a special 9:00 show on Halloween Night, Fri. The Annual VFW Patriot’s Pen writing competition for students in Grades 6-8, which awards prizes from $100 up to $5,000, has a deadline of 10:00pm on Fri. Oct. 31st for submissions. The competition is for students living within 50 miles of Brainerd and involved writing a 300-400 word essay. The Annual VFW Voice of Democracy Writing and Speaking competition for students in grades 9-12, which awards prizes from $200 to $35,000, has a deadline of 10:00pm on Fri. Oct. 31st. The competition is for students living within 50 miles of Brainerd. It is a 3 to 5 minute written and spoken essay and judging is based on originality, content and delivery. The Brainerd American Legion will host a HalloWeekend Jam Party starting Fri. Oct. 31st at 5:30 with a Meat Raffle! With 10 rounds, they have over $300 worth of meat to give away, plus they’ll have a costume contest, Jacob’s Voice merch, and Live Music by Wayside from 6:30-9:30…the costume contest at 7:30! All dollars raised will be donated to Jacob’s Voice. Then on Sat. Nov. 1st, doors will open at 11:00 with Black Light Bingo starting at 12:00 and 5:00 (must be 18+ to play). 11 games each session with $99 pots and a $250 final blackout round. Friends of the Aitkin Library will host a Used Book Sale from 9:00-3:00 on Fri. & Sat., Oct. 31 & Nov. 1st. Books, CDs, and DVDs will cost $.50 to $1.00. On Saturday, it's a Bag Sale at a cost of $3 per bag. Proceeds help fund events and programs at the Aitkin Public Library. The sale will be in the Community Room at the Library at 110 1st Ave. NE in Aitkin.
The Brainerd Nordic Ski Club will host its Annual Ski Swap at Forestview Middle School in Baxter on Sat. Nov. 1st. Equipment drop-off will start at 7:30 and the Sale will start at 9:00 and go until 12:00. New and used ski equipment and other winter sports equipment will be for sale. Come shop and have fun! The City of Breezy Point invites the public to a Ribbon Cutting and Open House on Mon. Nov. 3rd at its newly remodeled City Hall on Co. Rd. 11 in Breezy Point. The ceremony will begin at 5:30 pm.
A public hearing will be held at Forestview Middle School in Baxter on Mon. Nov. 3rd to hear suggestions regarding the preferred Highway 371 Overpass Plan presented by the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The public hearing will begin at 6:00pm in the Cafetorium.
The next Rosenmeier Forum, titled “The State of Public Safety in Minnesota” will be held at 7:00pm on Mon. Nov. 3rd in the Chalberg Theater at Central Lakes College in Brainerd. The event is free and open to the public. The speakers include multi-Emmy-Award-winning investigative reporter Liz Collin, retired police Lt. Bob Kroll and Bloomington Chief of Police, Booker T. Hodges. Each will address the issue of public safety from their perspective, followed by a roundtable discussion and questions from the audience.
Ruby’s Pantry will host another food distribution on Tues. Nov. 4th at Central Lakes College – Staples campus from 4:30-6:00. For a $25 cash donation, you’ll receive your share of the food (valued at over $100), which most often includes fresh and frozen produce, meat, eggs, dairy and other healthy foods. The City of Nisswa will host a Local Option Sales Tax Information Session for Businesses on Wed. Nov. 5 at 9:00am at the Nisswa Community Center. At this meeting, businesses will learn about the proposed updates at Nisswa City Park and discuss a local option sales tax as a possible funding source. Lakes Area United Way and Second Harvest Northland will host a Mobile Food Pantry on Thurs. Nov. 6th at Central Lakes College-Brainerd Campus starting at 10:00. There is no cost to participate and the food is distributed until 11:00 or until it runs out. This is a drive-thru event in the parking lot of the college. Signs will be posted. Brainerd Takes Action for the Boundary Waters will host an event on Thurs. Nov. 6th from 6:00-8:00pm at the Northland Arboretum in Brainerd. The group, concerned about outdoor recreation, fishing, camping and clean water, will provide updates on the Boundary Waters Wilderness protection work from Associate Director Sam Chadwick and more about the new water quality research from Biologist Andrew Gardon. The Grassroots Concert Fall Series continues on Fri. Nov. 7th at 7:00pm at the Live Well Nightclub & Coffee Bar at the Journey Church in Nisswa with a performance by Kelly Hunt. The daughter of an opera singer and a saxophonist, Kelly was raised in Memphis, amidst a motley mélange of musical influences ranging from Rachmaninov to Joni Mitchell to Mississippi John Hurt. Lakes Area Unlimited Learning will host its next presentation on Mon. Nov. 10th and will feature a program by Randal Dietrich: General John Vessey: Cold War Soldier and Statesman. Gen. Vessey, always proud to call Minnesota home, was a pivotal figure in the Cold War military history. Presenter, Dietrich, has served as the Exec. Dir. Of the MN Military & Veterans Museum at Camp Ripley for the last 7 years. The program will start at 1:30 at Heartwood Senior Living in Crosby. It’s free for members and $10 for non-members.
Fraud and Scams are becoming more common right now and Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union will host a FREE online webinar entitled Fraud & Scams on Mon. Nov. 10th from 5:30-6:30. The session will discuss how to identify and protect yourself from scams, how to stay informed about scams and what to do if you suspect you have already been scammed. The Pequot Lakes Public Schools invite the public to its annual Veterans Day Program on Tues. Nov. 11th starting at 9:00. The ceremony takes place in the Pequot Lakes High School Athletic Center and usually lasts about 1 hour. Patriot families are encouraged to invite the veterans in their lives to this tribute. ((A free breakfast will be available starting at 8:00am for Veterans in the Middle School/High School Cafeteria, too.))
Pillager Schools will recognize Veterans Day on Tues. Nov. 11th at 9:30 in the Pillager School CTC Center. Veterans from all wars, foreign and domestic, and from all branches of the armed forces will be honored. The program will include involvement from their students through music and speakers. All are welcome.
Brainerd High School will host its Annual Veterans Day Program on Tues. Nov. 11th and the public is invited to attend. The program will be held from 10:00-10:30 in the high school gym and will feature guest speakers and a salute to our veterans. Some veterans will also be receiving Quilts of Honor. The Brainerd Honor Guard will be at the All-Veterans Memorial at 4th and Laurel Streets and there will be three rifle volleys heard downtown at 11:11 a.m. All are welcome.

Actors Repertory Theater (ART) will present Patrick Spradlin in the one-man play ‘Clarence Darrow’ on Tues. Nov. 18th at 7:00 in the Dryden Theater on the Brainerd campus of Central Lakes College. Darrow is considered the greatest trial attorney of the 20th Century. His work in advocating for workers, for free speech, for championing civil rights and for defending those facing the death penalty makes him unparalleled in American legal history. The Brainerd Area Epilepsy Advocates group will be hold its regular 4th Monday of the Month Meeting on Mon. Nov. 24th from 5:00-7:00 at St. Joseph’s Medical Campus in Brainerd. Those who attend will learn more about seizure recognition and gain knowledge, skills and confidence in applying seizure first aid. The 16th Annual Brainerd Turkey Run (5K Run and 1 Mile Walk) will take place on Thurs. Nov. 27th in support of Shriners Hospitals for Kids. The Thanksgiving morning event starts and ends at the Brainerd Armory on Wright Street in Brainerd. The 5K will start at 9:00 and the 1 Mile walk will start shortly thereafter. A FREE Thanksgiving Day Community Meal will be served on Thurs. Nov. 27th out of the Brainerd American Legion, courtesy of the Legion, the Brainerd Eagles, VFW, and Elks clubs. Meals must be reserved in advance for either Pick-Up or Delivery… there will be NO DINE-IN option. Call 218-829-2249 to reserve your meal or meals for that day. In fact, you can call any of the clubs (Legion, Eagles, Elks or VFW in Brainerd) and leave a message with your name, phone number and number of meals needed.)
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds residents that the next Free Park Day in Minnesota is Fri. Nov. 28th. On this day, all Minnesota state parks and state recreation areas offer free admission to everyone – no vehicle permits are needed! Motley United Methodist Church will host its monthly Community Breakfast on Sat. Nov. 29th from 9:00-10:30. (Always the last Sat. of the month) There is no charge for the meal – it’s just an opportunity for members of the community to come together and share a meal. Free will donations are accepted for the Motely Area Food Shelf. The church is on 3rd Ave. S. in Motley.
Hard to believe, but it’s time to Wrap It Up…. The amazing, Emmy-award-winning vocal quartet, Tonic Sol-Fa will present their Final Holiday Tour concert in Brainerd on Sun. Nov. 30th at the Gichi-ziibi Center for the Arts. The concert will start at 7:00. This farewell run marks the end of a legendary chapter, bringing audiences one last chance to experience the group’s signature blend of harmonies and heartfelt humor, as they present it through seasonal classics and original holiday hits.
