Friends of the Brainerd Public Library invite the public to their Big Fall Book Sale that will take place Wed – Fri. Oct. 1-3 at the Westgate Mall in Brainerd. The sale will be held in the space across from Tradehome Shoes. Shoppers will find a wide selection of fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and more. Most adult books are priced at just 50 cents and most kids books are 25 cents. Sale hours are Oct. 1-3 from 10:00-6:00 daily. All proceeds from the sale will support the Brainerd Public Library’s programs and services.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol’s 2nd Annual Spooktacular Fun Show will be held at 9:00 Sat. Oct. 4th at the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds arena in Brainerd. The Staples Area Chamber presents OKTOBERFEST on Sat. Oct. 4th at Northern Pacific Park in Staples. Brainerd Parks and Recreation invites you to the 18th Annual Great Pumpkin Festival on Sat. Oct. 4th from 1:00-4:00 at Memorial Park (on Mill Ave.) in Brainerd. The Babinski Foundation’s Fall Festival will be held on Sat. Oct. 4th from 11:00-5:00 at the Babinski Shelter in Pequot Lakes and will be fun for the whole family. Enjoy delicious food from the food trucks, carnival games, hayrides, live music and a huge flea market! Look to the sky, too, for Hot Air Balloon Rides (weather permitting?)! The Pine River American Legion Auxiliary will serve its last fundraising breakfast of 2025 at the PR Legion from 8:00-12:00 on Sun. Oct. 5th. The breakfast will feature build-your-own-omelettes, with sides, including pancakes. The cost is $12 for Adults… $6 for kids. The bar will be open and the TVs on so you can watch “any football game” that “may” be on at that early hour on a Sunday!

Prism Organizing Network invites those in the lakes area LGBTQ Community and allies to join them for the second in a series of North Central Minnesota listening sessions to gather feedback on what’s great, what’s challenging and what could help to better serve LGBTQ folks in communities throughout the area. First Congregational United Church of Christ in Brainerd has offered a hospitable space (and refreshments) for people of all faiths, beliefs and backgrounds to come together on Mon. Oct. 6th from 6:00-8:00pm to have some conversations. Gather at 6:00 for a simple dinner and introduction, then share a guided table conversation. Please register through Facebook page, Brainerd LGBTQ Community Conversation, on so organizers can have enough food prepared with dietary restrictions considered.
The public is invited to attend the next Rosenmeier Forum entitled “Immigration to Minnesota from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia” with featured speaker and author Steve Young, global executive director of The Caux Round Table. Forestview Middle School in Baxter will host a Choose Kindness Community Event for youth and families on Tues. Oct. 7th from 5:30-7:30. The event being held to celebrate kindness and to strengthen the community. A free meal will be provided by Mickey’s, plus they’ll have music, vision & hearing screenings, Kindness projects, activities and info and Guest Speaker, Kaitlyn Schroeder, who will speak at 6:30. Starting on Sat. Oct. 11th, Sexual Assault Services will be hosting an Online Auction Fundraiser leading up to their bigger event on Thurs. Oct. 16th at Big Axe Brewing (see event on that date…). The online auction will open on Oct. 11th at 12:00 and run through Oct. 18th at 12:00. Suicide is something that affects all of us, and you can make a difference in saving lives by participating in this year’s Out of the Darkness Walk on Sat. Oct. 11th at the Pines at Grand View Lodge in Nisswa. Check-in starts at 9:00 and the WALK will begin at 10:00. Funds raised from the Walk will go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Lakes Area Unlimited Learning will present a program by Hillary Swanson, the Executive Director of the Crow Wing County Historical Society, on Hortense McKay: Bataan Jungle Angel. The Lakeland PBS documentary "Dedicated to Care: LTC Hortense McKay" is an intimate and compelling documentary that delves into the extraordinary life of Brainerd hero, Lieutenant Colonel Hortense McKay, a dedicated nurse whose courage and commitment shaped her legacy and paved the way for women in the military. The program will start at 1:30 at Heartwood Senior Living in Crosby. It’s free to attend for members and just $10 for non-members.
Everyone is invited to the Indigenous People’s Day Celebration on Mon. Oct. 13th at the Gichi-ziibi Center for the Arts in Brainerd from 4:30-7:00 pm. It’ll be an evening of reflection, learning and celebration where guests will enjoy music, storytelling, and cultural sharing that honors the rich heritage and ongoing contributions of Indigenous peoples in our region and across the nation. The Lakes Area Writer’s Alliance Annual Fall Conference, “A Writer’s Roadmap,” will be held Fri. & Sat. Oct. 17 & 18th at Madden’s on Gull Lake in Brainerd. The conference will begin on Friday at 7:00pm with a social so writers can meet and network with fellow writers, published authors and publishing professionals. The Haunted Trail at Holst Acres will be open from 7:00-10:00pm on Fri. & Sat. Oct. 17 & 18 and again Oct. 24 & 25th in Staples. Get your SCARE on by venturing into the haunted woods! ***The Annual Coats for Kids Coat Distribution event will be held on Sat. Oct. 18th at the Westgate Mall in Brainerd. From 9:00-2:00, kids who are in need of a warm, winter coat may come to the mall with a parent or guardian and choose a coat, along with any other winterwear they need for the upcoming cold-weather season. The child must be in attendance, so they can choose and try on the items. All items will be free. The distribution site will be in the former Christopher Banks site by the former JoAnn Fabrics entrance to the Mall.
