All zoos should be held to a set of standards to benefit not only the animals, but zookeepers and the public as well.
Animal Standards
Spacious enclosure with access to weather safe shelter
Food and water- basic necessities
Ability to hide from visitors in the case that an animal is stressed or being harassed
Toys and enrichment activities that keep the animal from being bored
A clean and kept up with enclosure
Time out of the public's eyes for rest and recovery
Human Standards
A safe working environment
Adequate distance and fencing/ glass between the visitors and animals
A clean environment and facilities
Supportive staff and management
How do you know if your zoo is meeting these requirements?
AZA accreditation is important to look for when evaluating zoos. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums is a non profit organization dedicated to
