In today's world, everyone is obsessed with data. Schools want data to track student performance. Companies request data to get customer feedback.
Google forms gives us a powerful, free data collection tool. I love, love, love Google forms because it is so versatile in the classroom!
Google forms lets you create a survey with different questions: short answer, long answer, multiple choice, check boxes, drop down menu, and more! Google forms allows you to track data in the app itself or in a Google sheet.
Some of you might be wondering, how can I possibly use Google forms in my class? Google forms has many different uses in the classroom. Look at some of the different ways that I have used Google forms in my classroom.
If you want students to answer questions at the beginning, during, or end of class, use a Google Form! You can add images, links, or videos to the form. All student responses are gathered in a spreadsheet, and you can use the responses to adjust your teaching.
If you need students or parents to sign up to bring something to class, go on a field trip, choose a parent/teacher conference time, etc., you can have them sign up in a Google form!
If you want to eliminate a choice after someone has taken it (like remove a time slot once a parent has signed up for it), use the Choice Eliminator add-on.
Do you want to know more information about your students or their preferences? How about parents? You can create a simple survey and send it out. You could also create a one-question form to have students vote (like for Homecoming, etc.). The responses can be displayed as graphs in the Responses tab of the form. Administrators could use Google Forms to collect whole-school or departmental surveys.
You can create a rubric in a Google Form to make an easy place for you (or other students) to assign grades and provide feedback to students. Here is an example of a rubric using a Google Form. You can then use the Autocrat add-on to turn the feedback into a document! See an example here.
If you create a quiz with multiple choice questions, Google Forms will autograde it for you! Create your quiz and click the gear in the upper right hand corner (settings). Choose "Quizzes" and turn on "Make this a Quiz". Go back through your questions and create the answer key.
Google forms could also be used for mid-term progress for students, data collection for SLOs, reading logs (really any type of logs!), sharing examples in professional development, late work submission (and you can receive email notification!), discipline referrals, and many more!
You can create differentiated forms for students based on their responses to questions! You can send students to another section of a Google form by choosing "Go to section based on answer". This allows for some students to review a skill while other students move ahead! See a great blog post here on step by step for creating a differentiated Google Form!
