Brittany Avila received her graduate training in experimental psychology with an emphasis in cognitive development from the University of Mississippi. Along with her mentor, Stephanie Miller, her research has focused on how certain cognitive factors (e.g., executive function) relate to creativity in children.

Avila has taught multiple courses within psychology. In 2016 she won the Teaching Excellence Award for graduate students for her work teaching introductory and cognitive psychology and researching the effects of quizzing on final exam performance.

Combining her interests of teaching, researching teaching and learning, and mentoring undergraduate students, Avila joined the department in 2018 as a lecturer and academic advisor. She is the current faculty mentor for the University of Nevada, Reno's chapter of Psi Chi.
