Guidelines for Completing Assignments in PSYC 3060
Assignments to be turned in to the D2L dropbox must be turned in to correct the D2L drop box by the day and time they are due. Assignments submitted by email or in any other form will not be graded until submitted to the appropriate D2L dropbox.
Below are instructions for completing these assignments:
You must answer each question thoroughly and thoughtfully in order to receive full credit for completion of that assignment.
Be sure to number your answers and include the question with your anwer. This makes grading the assignments much easier for Dr. Blackhart, which puts Dr. Blackhart in a better mood, which likely results in higher grades for you!
Assignments must be submitted as .doc, .docx, .rtf, or .pdf formats. If you submit your assignment in any other format, I will not be able to open or grade your assignments.
Assignments should use proper English; that is, you should write in full sentences, use proper grammar and punctuation, and spell check your assignment.
Assignments are to be turned in to the appropriate D2L drop boxes.
Important note: When you turn in your assignments to the D2L drop box, D2L will send you a confirmation email. You should check to make sure you receive a confirmation email whenever you turn in an assignment to the D2L drop box. In addition, KEEP THIS EMAIL in case you need proof that you turned in the assignment to the D2L drop box.
All assignments and assignment due dates can be found in the course schedule.
Grading of Assignments
Assignments will be graded shortly after they are due, typically within one week of being submitted.
On assignments for which there are clearly correct or incorrect answers (e.g., statistics assignments), you will have the opportunity to redo those questions/items and resubmit the assignment once for additional credit. The only feedback you will receive on these assignments is which questions/items are incorrect. Corrections must be turned in within 2 days (i.e., 48 hours) of receiving feedback on the assignment in order for additional credit to be earned. This does not apply to assignments completed in class.
Late Assignment Policy
Due dates for all assignments can be found in the course schedule. Any assignment turned in late will have 20% deducted from the total points possible for that assignment for each day (24 hrs. from the end of class) it is late (i.e., if your assignment is one day late, 20% is deducted from the total points possible; if your assignment is 3 days late, 60% will be deducted from the total points possible); this includes weekends.
Late assignments are to be turned in to the D2L dropbox for each assignment. Please remember that assignments completed in class cannot be turned in late or made up, even if you attend class via Zoom.

You will complete two additional critiques of empirical psychology journal articles this semester. For each critique, you will read the article assigned carefully and with a critical eye. You will then list potential problems and/or limitations (no fewer than 5) that are not recognized by the authors with a brief explanation of why each might be a problem.
It is expected that your article critiques be must more sophisticated this semester than they were in PSYC3050. As you continue to learn more about research methodology and statistical analyses, your critiques should be more thorough.
A word of advice: do not leave these assignments to the last minute.
Each article critique is worth 25 points.

The goal of this assignment is to give you experience in critically examining a popular press article reporting on peer-reviewed published empirical psychological research. Popular press resources include traditional newspapers (e.g., New York Times, Washington Post, Johnson City Press), science blogs (e.g., IFLScience), and other online popular press resources (e.g., ScienceDaily, Psychology Today, VeryWellMind, Medium, The Atlantic).
You will find a popular press article describing research related to Psychology. You will provide a critical review of the popular press article using the published peer-reviewed original source article (or articles) to verify or discredit the conclusions the popular press article contains. The emphasis of this assignment is literature review, critical thinking, and gaining experience using research tools (e.g., article databases).
This assignment is worth 25 points and is due to the D2L dropbox by 11:30am on Tuesday, November 8th.
The goal of this assignment is to give you experience in reporting empirical results to the public. How can you best communicate the findings of research in a way that is accurate and not misleading but also in a way that interests the public and that can understand?
You will find an empirical (meaning they orignal conducted research) peer-reviewed paper published in a psychology journal (this must be submitted with your assignment). Choose a paper that interests you and that you yourself can understand (you can't communicate the findings well if you don't understand them well yourself). Write a newspaper or news blog like story reporting the results of the research in a way that the public can understand but that also captures the interest of your audience. That is, it shouldn't be dry, but it shouldn't be sensationalized or inaccurate either.
This assignment is worth 25 points and is due to the D2L dropbox by 11:30am on Tuesday, November 22nd.
