Guidelines for Completing Assignments in PSYC 3050
Assignments to be turned in to the D2L dropbox must be turned in to correct the D2L drop box by the day and time they are due. Assignments submitted by email or in any other form will not be graded until submitted to the appropriate D2L dropbox.
Below are instructions for completing these assignments:
You must answer each question thoroughly and thoughtfully in order to receive full credit for completion of that assignment.
Be sure to number your answers and include the question with your anwer. This makes grading the assignments much easier for Dr. Blackhart, which puts Dr. Blackhart in a better mood, which likely results in higher grades for you!
Assignments must be submitted as .doc, .docx, .rtf, or .pdf formats. If you submit your assignment in any other format, I will not be able to open or grade your assignments.
Assignments should use proper English; that is, you should write in full sentences, use proper grammar and punctuation, and spell check your assignment.
Assignments are to be turned in to the appropriate D2L drop boxes.
Important note: When you turn in your assignments to the D2L drop box, D2L will send you a confirmation email. You should check to make sure you receive a confirmation email whenever you turn in an assignment to the D2L drop box. In addition, KEEP THIS EMAIL in case you need proof that you turned in the assignment to the D2L drop box.
All assignments and assignment due dates can be found in the course schedule.
Grading of Assignments
Assignments will be graded shortly after they are due, typically within one week of being submitted.
On assignments for which there are clearly correct or incorrect answers (e.g., statistics assignments), you will have the opportunity to redo those questions/items and resubmit the assignment once for additional credit. The only feedback you will receive on these assignments is which questions/items are incorrect. Corrections must be turned in within 2 days (i.e., 48 hours) of receiving feedback on the assignment in order for additional credit to be earned. This does not apply to assignment completed in class.
Late Assignment Policy
Due dates for all assignments can be found in the course schedule. Any assignment turned in late will have 20% deducted from the total points possible for that assignment for each day (24 hrs. from the end of class) it is late (i.e., if your assignment is one day late, 20% is deducted from the total points possible; if your assignment is 3 days late, 60% will be deducted from the total points possible); this includes weekends.
Late assignments are to be turned in to the D2L dropbox for each assignment. Please remember that assignments completed in class cannot be turned in late or made up.
Assignments
You are required to complete CITI training (through the ETSU IRB) for education in the protection of human research subjects. For details about completion of this training, please see the instructions provided on the ETSU IRB CITI training. This assignment is worth 25 points.
Note: Do NOT complete the Students in Research course. You will not receive credit for completion of that course.
You should select the non biomedical research course (social, behavioral, and educational research).
If you have already completed the CITI training, you may provide a copy of verification of the completion of this training in order to receive credit. Again, the Students in Research course will not count for this assignment.
Credit may also be earned by verification of completed training in the ethical treatment of animals as research subjects (i.e., this may take the place of the CITI human subjects training).
Training must be completed, and certificates verifying completion of training must be submitted to the D2L dropbox, by 11:59pm on Friday, February 4th.
You will complete two critiques of empirical psychology journal articles this semester. For each critique, you will read the article assigned carefully and with a critical eye. You will then list potential problems and/or limitations (no fewer than 5) that are not recognized by the authors with a brief explanation of why each might be a problem.
It is expected that your second article critique will be more sophisticated than your first as you learn more about research methodology, so the second critique will be graded less leniently than the first article critique.
That said, it is expected that you really try to find and recognize problems and limitations of each article and that what you turn in is thoughtful and thorough.
A word of advice: do not leave these assignments to the last minute.
The first article critique is due Feb. 22; the second is due April 21. These are worth 15 points each.
For this assignment, you are required to attend the Boland Undergraduate Research Symposium and/or the Appalachian Student Research Forum (combined events taking place on April 6 & 7 in the Culp Center) at ETSU.
You must attend/view at least 3 presentation (oral, poster, or some combination of both) and write brief summaries and critiques of each presentation you attended and/or viewed.
This assignment is due to the D2L dropbox by 11:00am on Tuesday, April 12th.
Several smaller assignments will be given throughout the semester that are designed to help you better understand the material being discussed during the lectures. Some of these assignments will consist of you completing an assigned reading or an activity related to the material we are covering in class and answering some questions about that reading or activity prior to coming to class. These assignments are to be turned in to the D2L dropbox.
Some assignments will instead be completed in class. Assignments that are completed and turned in during class cannot be made up; no exceptions.
The point value of each assignment will vary.
